Long-term care for the elderly in the context of the active ageing concept

The need for long-term care for the elderly in Europe will increase more and more due to the ageing population in the countries. A deteriorating demographic structure, rising mortality and declining birth rates, longer life expectancy and high external migration are key factors negatively affecting cost-effective pension and healthcare systems. People live and age differently depending on their lifestyle, health status and genetic inheritance. However, they all strive to maintain their economic, social and health status after retirement, as well as to have an active and fulfilling life. This becomes a serious challenge for the social systems of the countries, which must guarantee a dignified way of life for every individual who has reached the retirement age and cannot take care of himself. This article presents the possibilities of providing long-term care for the elderly who have difficulties in their normal daily activities and life challenges due to their old age while trying to live an intensive life in good health and maintaining their previous economic and social status.

Zapotrzebowanie na długoterminową opiekę nad osobami starszymi w Europie będzie coraz większe ze względu na starzenie się społeczeństwa w poszczególnych krajach. Pogarszająca się struktura demograficzna, rosnąca śmiertelność i spadające wskaźniki urodzeń, dłuższa średnia długość życia i wysoka migracja zewnętrzna to kluczowe czynniki wpływające negatywnie na opłacalne systemy emerytalne i opieki zdrowotnej. Ludzie żyją i starzeją się w różny sposób, w zależności od stylu życia, stanu zdrowia i uwarunkowań genetycznych. Po przejściu na emeryturę wiele osób na ogół stara się utrzymać swój dotychczasowy status ekonomiczny, społeczny i zdrowotny, a także pragnie prowadzić aktywne i satysfakcjonujące życie. Staje się to poważnym wyzwaniem dla systemów społecznych krajów – muszą one zagwarantować godny sposób życia każdemu, kto osiągnął wiek emerytalny i nie może dłużej pracować. Autorka niniejszego artykułu przedstawia możliwości zapewnienia opieki długoterminowej osobom starszym, które mają trudności z wykonywaniem normalnych codziennych czynności i wyzwań życiowych ze względu na podeszły wiek.

Skoncentrowano się na problematyce starzenia się ludności w kontekście wybranych wskaźników zrównoważonego rozwoju: zdrowia publicznego i zmian demograficznych.

It is the objective of the article to show aging of the Polish society in the context of challenges presented by the process to sustainable development. It focuses on issues connected with aging of the population in the context of selected sustainable development ratios such as public health and demographic changes.

Diversity of competencies of employees due to age on the example of teachers in the Opole Voivodeship

The following paper presents an analysis of the level of competencies of teachers in the Opole Voivodeship. The aim of the paper is to determine if there is a relationship between the age of teachers and their level of competencies. The analysis has been based on CAWI research and took the form of a self-assessment of the competencies level made by the teachers and an assessment made by principals. As a result it was found that there is no correlation between age and the level of competencies and it is difficult to identify differences because of the age.

Artykuł przedstawia analizę poziomu kompetencji nauczycieli województwa opolskiego. Głównym jego celem było ustalenie, czy istnieje zależność pomiędzy wiekiem nauczycieli a ich poziomem kompetencji. Podstawą do udzielenia odpowiedzi były badania CAWI, przeprowadzone wśród nauczycieli i dyrektorów szkół. Analiza poziomu kompetencji została przeprowadzona na podstawie samooceny nauczycieli oraz oceny przedstawionej przez dyrektorów szkół. W wyniku badań ustalono, że nie ma korelacji pomiędzy wiekiem a poziomem kompetencji nauczycieli według dyrektorów szkół.

This paper brings up the issue of population aging and its influence on designing and construction of buildings in Poland. It also touches the problem of adaptation of existing facilities to the needs of the elderly and the disabled. Moreover, current trends in Polish demographics and possible outlook for the next 45 years has been presented. The author presents the current legal state concerning rules and regulations on the aspects of adjusting the buildings and their parts to the needs of the disabled. Additionally, the dimensions and the areas of movement for the disabled as well as the primary functional and requirements for bathrooms have been described. In the next paragraph, a concept of Ambient Assisted Living with examples of sanitary equipment for use in residential buildings has been propose.
