A method is presented for the study of surface-active properties of a fluids, in burnishing and shot peening processes used, which consists in comparing mean plastic strains of thin metal foil subjected to tensile tests in the examined fluid and in air. As a surface-active additive to the fluid (mineral oil), methyl polymethacrylate solution was used. It was found that the surfactant activity coefficient depended on the type of examined fluid as well as on the thickness of the foil being stretched. Results of analyses of the surface-active properties of a fluid can be compared only when metal foils of equal thickness made from one specific material are used. It can be supposed that the introduction of methyl polymethacrylate solution as an additive to the metalworking fluid will have a beneficial effect on the course and the results of burnishing and shot peening of metals.

In the paper the results of experimental studies on the effect of the reological properties of the liquid on pressure drop for the air-water and air-polymer solutions flow in the spray column equipped with conical and profiled confusors, have been presented. It has been shown that in polymer solutions the drag coefficient is greater than that in water. The reduction of pressure drop in a column with a confusor of profiled internal surfaces has been observed.

The paper presents some chosen questions of the non-Newtonian properties of a liquid effect on suspending and aeration in agitated systems. Special attention throughout the study was paid to the critical agitator speed and gas hold-up in viscous power-law liquids (aqueous solutions of high-molecular carboxymethylcellulose sodium salt and polyacrylamide). The tested agitator was the standard Rushton turbine. The gas distributor had a truncated cone form.

The effect of various additives (salts, surfactants) on the change of rheological properties of aqueous solutions of ethylene polioxide (PEG) and carboxymethylcelulose sodium salt (Na-CMC) of various molar masses has been presented. The additives studied were sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, and sodium carbonate as well as hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride.

The experimental comparison of the results of different measuring techniques in determination of the rheological parameters of visco - elastic fluids producing of the friction reduction effect in turbulent region of a flow in the tubes, has been carried out. This effect is peculiar to the solutions of high - molecular polymers such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyacryloamide (PAA). The studies were directed on the effect of both the structure deformation and the rheological properties with solution ageing, on the choice of the optimal measure system and on the estimation of the relationship between the results obtained by means of different techniques.
