Pojęcie centrum cechuje pluralizm semantyczny, gdyż nawet w dyscyplinie naukowej architektury i urbanistyki znaczenie uzależnione jest od skali ujęcia zagadnienia. Autorka odwołuje się do badań nad definiowaniem centrów i śródmieść z okresu drugiej połowy XX wieku konfrontując je ze współczesnymi teoriami (przestrzenie przepływu) we wszystkich aspektach środowiska miasta.

The notion of the centre is characterised by semantic pluralism, as its meaning is dependent on the scale from which we view a given subject, even in the discipline of architecture and urban planning. The author refers to studies on defining city centres and downtown areas from the period of the second half of the 20th century, confronting them with contemporary theories (space of flows) in all aspects of the urban environment.

The author focuses on the issues related to the polycentric character of metropolitan areas. The example of Milan provides a convenient opportunity for inspiring research because of the special role of these issues in the current development strategy of the city. The article presents two reconstruction projects of inner-city areas – at present the largest in Italy – which will result in crystallisation of urban nodes.

Autora skupia się na problematyce policentryczności obszarów metropolitalnych. Przykład Mediolanu stanowi dogodną okazję do inspirujących poszukiwań badawczych ze względu na szczególną rolę tych zagadnień w aktualnym planie rozwoju miasta. W artykule przedstawiono dwa, obecnie największe we Włoszech, projekty przebudowy terenów śródmiejskich, których efektem będzie krystalizowanie węzłów miejskości.

The urban form is an important issue on explaining quality of life or housing environments, since it has implications in terms of social, environmental and economic aspects. In this paper, taking as case study the seven biggest metropolitan areas in Spain, we explore whether urban form, understood as polynucleation (morphological) is related to polycentricity (functional) understood as the level of interconnections depicted by journey-to-work mobility. We found a high correlation between the morphological and functional sides of polycentrism, nonetheless, polycentricity succeed in understanding the kind of relations among subcenters, namely it permits to foreseen the kind of transportation systems needed in each of the studied cities. In terms of social, economic and environmental sustainability, it is exposed the discussion on whether a high level of polynucleation and interlinking would be more desirable in the construction of the house of tomorrow.

Artykuł rozwija problematykę urbanistyczną poruszaną w trakcie dyskusji nad delimitacją obszaru centrum aglomeracji górnośląskiej oraz zagadnieniem jej przekształceń przestrzennych. Autor przedstawia interpretację policentryczności struktury metropolitalnej, odwołując się do pojęć centrum miejskiego i metropolitalnego. Poszukuje związku pomiędzy zmianami zachodzącymi w skali metropolitalnej oraz programem interwencji projektowej, którego przedmiotem jest obszar śródmiejski Katowic.

This paper covers an urban issue arising from the debate of the delimitation of the core of the Upper silesian agglomeration and the question of its spatial transformation. The author presents an interpretation of polycentric metropolitan structure by recalling the ideas of a urban and metropolitan centers. In this paper the author seeks the link between the changes that are taking place at the metropolitan scale and a project relating to the inner city area of Katowice.
