The paper presents the results of glow discharge assisted oxynitriding of titanium alloys Ti 1 A1 I Mn and Ti6Al2Cr2Mo carried out in the N2 +air atmosphere. The oxynitrided diffusion layer is thus produced of the Ti(O,N) + Ti2N + aTi(N) type with a high hardness. The oxynitriding treatment does not spoil the high corrosion resistance of titanium alloys, especially when the treatment is conducted for longer times: after the 3h and 6h processes, the corrosion resistance only slightly decreased, whereas after the 12h process, when the Ti(ON) layer was the thickest, the corrosion resistance was comparable with that of- the untreated substrate. An increase of the process duration and, thus, of the thicknesses of the individual zones of the layer, increasingly increases the resistance of the layer to frictional wear.
