Planned obsolescence: gain or loss to the consumer?

Planned obsolescence is one of a company’s strategies in relation to its product. It happens in three ways: (1) the company shortens the life span of the product; (2) the repair of the product is made too expensive, and therefore the consumer decides to buy a new one; and (3) the company introduces better models. Planned obsolescence is often assessed as unethical behavior, contrary to the idea of sustainable development. In this article, I present the problem of planned obsolescence and then explain that this phenomenon brings not only losses to the consumer, but also benefits.

Informatyzacja elektroenergetyki wiąże się z wymianą obecnie funkcjonujących urządzeń służących do ochrony i kontroli pracy systemu elektroenergetycznego na nowe, elektroniczne, posiadające procesor, system operacyjny i własne oprogramowanie. Nowe urządzenia będą bardziej złożone funkcjonalnie, przez co bardziej niż dotychczasowe narażone na różne uszkodzenia. Na rynku urządzeń dla gospodarstw domowych obserwuje się niepokojący trend. Podejrzewa się, że część nowych produktów zostaje przygotowanych w taki sposób, aby skrócić czas ich bezawaryjnej pracy. Artykuł zawiera opis tego zjawiska oraz potencjalne zagrożenia i skutki, które mogłoby spowodować celowe postarzanie urządzeń sieciowych, zapewniających niezawodną pracę sieci elektroenergetycznej.

Informatization of power industry is connected with the replacement of currently functionning equipment destined to protect and control of a power system with new, electronic ones possessing processors, operating systems and proprietary softwares. New devices will be functionally more complex and therefore more vulnerable to various damages. A worrying trend can be observed in the household appliances market – it is suspected that a part of new products is prepared so as to shorten their life-cycle. Here we can find a description of this process as well as of potential dangers and effects that can be caused by intentional obsolescence of the equipment that task is to ensure reliable work of a power network.
