The market square in Katowice – a place which no longer exists – an evolution of the spatial structure

This study attempts to explain why the space in the centre of Katowice is formally called “The Market Square” even though the square itself no longer exists. Some archival documents and existing studies are analysed. The evolution of the market square in Katowice is presented against the background of historical and economic transformations, putting an emphasis on depicting valuable and interesting architecture that was irretrievably lost and replaced with entirely new urban fabric. Moreover, the article aims to show that the region of Upper Silesia does not only constitute industrial plants but also, created by the mixture of cultures and nationalities, other types of architecture, that was irretrievably lost. It was found out that the market is not actually the main square.

Zetknięcia fasad obecne w pierzejach ulic i placów miast są istotnym oraz niedocenianym elementem, wspótworzącym zarówno spójność ciągłej pierzei, jak i generującym szczególny rodzaj jej ekspresji. W europejskich miastach o zagęszczonej miejskiej tkance są wszędzie, ale w urbanistyce nie mają swojej specyficznej nazwy oraz definicji. Głównym celem artykułu jest wskazanie wpływu świadomie formowanych miejsc-zetknięć-fasad na wysoką jakość tworzonych z ich pomocą wnętrz miejskich1.

The interfaces of façades in urban walls of city streets and squares are a significant and underestimated element which contributes to the coherence of a continuous urban wall as well as generates the latter’s specific expressive nature. In European cities with a dense urban fabric they are everywhere, but in urban design area they have neither a specific name nor a definition. The main purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how consciously formed façade-to-façade interfaces influence the quality of urban interiors created using them.

Plac Wolności w Poznaniu (do 1919 r. Wilhelmplatz) powstał pod koniec XVIII w. po włączeniu Wielkopolski do Prus. O jego charakterze zadecydowały budowle kulturalne, w tym polskie fundacje (Biblioteka i galeria Raczyńskich i "Bazar"). Plac w 2 poł. XIX w. i 1 poł. XX w. uatrakcyjniły ekskluzywne hotele, domy handlowe, banki i luksusowe kamienice. We jego wnętrzu wysoka zieleń tworzyła klimat niewielkiego parku. Mimo powstania na początku XX w. nowego centrum administracyjnego, plac nie stracił funkcji "serca miasta". Jednak od połowy XX w. postępująca strukturalna erozja śródmieścia Poznania spowodowała upadek znaczenia jego przestrzeni publicznych. W 1993 r. władze - niezainteresowane rewitalizacją placu, oddały decyzję o jego kształcie przestrzennym inwestorowi budującemu podziemny parking. Zachowawcza koncepcja zagospodarowania spowodowała, że plac pozostaje przestrzenią martwą.

Wolności Square in Poznań (until 1919 named "Wilhelmplatz") was created at the end of 18th century after Wielkopolska's incorporation to Prussia. Its character was determined by cultural buildings, including Polish foundations (the Raczyńscy Library and Gallery, as well as "Bazar"), supplemented during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century with high standard commercial, hotel and banking services. Tall plants inside the square created a climate of a small park. Despite creation of a new administration centre at the beginning of the 20th century, the square did not lose its importance as "a town heart". However, structural erosion of the Poznań centre during the second half of the 20th century caused a decline of its public spaces. In 1993 authorities were not interested in revitalisation of the square; they passed the decision concerning its spatial arrangement to an investor building an underground parking there. Their conservative development concept made the square a dead space.
