The effectiveness of reclamation activities in a tailing pond has been evaluated by the application of mineral and organic substances and remediation plants with water absorbing geocomposites. The research was conducted on the tailing pond of the former copper mine in Iwiny, Poland, basing on a strict, trifactorial experiment set up with the use of the split-split-plot method with 4 replications. The main experimental factors were the variants of substrate modification, various species (or mixtures) of reclamation plants and the presence of water absorbing geocomposites. The conducted experiments did not demonstrate a significant influence of various types of tailing additives. The usability of individual species of reclamation grass or their mixtures for the reclamation was similar. Water absorbing geocomposites contributed to the improvement of difficult vegetation conditions that occur in tailing ponds.

Accumulation and enrichment of heavy metals in the above ground parts of Australian native Acacia pycnantha (Ap) and Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Ec) growing in an abandoned copper mine located in Kapunda, South Australia have been studied. Cu and other metals (Na, Al, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb) in plants and corresponding soils were analysed to evaluate plant interaction with soils containing heavy metals. As per the total metal analysis of leaf and corresponding soil samples, Ap accumulated 93.6 mg kgˉ¹ of Cu in leaf while the corresponding soil concentration was 1632 mg kgˉ¹. The Ec accumulated 5341 mg kgˉ¹ of Cu in leaf while the concentration of this heavy metal in soil was 65 mg kgˉ¹ in soil. The ESEM spectral analysis also showed a high leaf concentration of Cu in Ec (7%) as against only 0.12% in Ap. The average bioconcentration factor for Cu, Zn,Cd and Pb in Ec wasmuch higher than that of Ap. Similarly, enrichment factor was more in Ec for Cu, Zn and Pb than in Ap. In contrast, translocation factor for only Zn and Cd was high in Ap. This study points out that Ec and Ap have different stabilising potential in remediating heavy metals like Cu in mined soils.

Południowe rejony Polski są jednymi z najbardziej uprzemysłowionych części kraju. W krajobraz wpisują się w dalszym ciągu wymagające podjęcia działań rekultywacyjnych zwałowiska po eksploatacji rud Zn/Pb stanowiące zagrożenie metalonośne. Poszukiwanie możliwości szybkiego, efektywnego i uzasadnionego ekonomicznie sposobu rekultywacji zwałowiska podyktowało wybór osadów ściekowych oraz powszechnie dostępnych komponentów dla wzbogacenia materiału zwałowiska w wyraźnie brakującą materię organiczną. Wyniki analiz otrzymane na podstawie przeprowadzonego doświadczenia wazonowego wskazują na niezadowalające efekty w stosowaniu samego przemysłowego osadu ściekowego. Perspektywiczne możliwości daje łączenie zaproponowanych dodatków, co pozwoli na stworzenie warunków sprzyjających bytowaniu roślinności, a tym samym ograniczy niekorzystny wpływ zwałowiska na otoczenie.

Southern regions of Poland belong to one of the most industrialized parts of country. The main part of the scenery are the zinc-lead dumping grounds which constantly require remediation activity results with heavy metals dusting danger. Looking for fast, effective and economically reasonable remediation method of dumping grounds suggest to use sewage sludge and generally available organically components to enrich nutrient purity of zinc-lead dumping grounds. Results obtained during pot experiment, indicate insufficient positive influence of industrial sewage sludge without any additional compounds. In perspective possible is connection of proposed components in nutritiously optimal composition for permanent growth of plants, which significantly reduce highly unfavorable influence of dumping grounds on environment.

Phytoremediation is a new method used for environment protection therefore is a lot to be done to improve it. It is still a perspective method and perhaps in the future it will be one of fundamental metheods for purrification of the environment. It is of particular importance for soils. one of the most important resourses of our planet.
