Aquaculture plays a great role in producing foodstuffs, sustaining inland capture fisheries and providing employment. The key to future development in pond aquaculture is diversification of production technology, intensity, and function connected to increasing the environmental value of pond areas. New production systems involve a combination of intensive and extensive pond culture, increasing productivity and improving nutrient utilisation and fish species diversification. The most important principle of these systems is the possibility to use the wastes from intensive aquaculture as the input for extensive, environment-friendly fish production. These systems were proven to be profitable and sustainable in tropical and subtropical areas. However, for temperate climatic conditions, such data are scarce. For this reason, we decided to discuss modifications that, in our opinion, can be applied in an extensive part of the integrated intensive-extensive system in temperate climatic conditions in order to increase the overall productivity of the pond aquaculture.

Content available remote Rare diatom Stauroneis balatonis Pantocsek recorded in Lake Savsko, Serbia
EN
Although well represented in the fossil diatom flora throughout Europe and Asia, from the early-middle Miocene to the Quaternary, Stauroneis balatonis is considered a very rare diatom with a contemporary distribution limited to two ancient lakes – Ohrid and Prespa. The objective of this study was to describe the first finding of S. balatonis in Serbia in Lake Savsko and to update information on the distribution and ecology of this rare species. Periphyton samples were collected from artificial substrates incubated at three depths (0.5 m, 0.8 m and 1.4 m) in Lake Savsko and the epilithic community was sampled in the littoral zone. Samples were collected weekly in summer 2014, from mid-July to mid-September. Diatom permanent slides were prepared and small numbers of S. balatonis specimens were observed only in samples collected in September from artificial substrates incubated at the greatest depth (1.4 m). Our results significantly contribute to the information on the contemporary distribution and the ecology of this rare diatom taxon, especially considering the fact that S. balatonis specimens were observed in our study in diatom communities developed on artificial substrates and in an urban reservoir, i.e. Lake Savsko.

The experiments testing the toxicity of glyphosate Roundup® formulation were conducted on the natural microphytobenthic communities collected from the Gulf of Gdansk. The toxic effect of glyphosate was assessed by changes in the biomass of microphytobenthos cells [mm3 ∙ ml-1], chlorophyll a concentration and reduction of efficiency of photosystem II. Negative impact of glyphosate on microphytobenthic communities, both at the cellular and population scale, was determined. Hence it can be concluded that certain concentrations of the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate – active substance), in the marine environment may adversely impact natural microphytobenthic communities, and in consequence also other elements of the ecosystem.

Due fast biomass production, high affinity for N and P and possibilities to CO2 sequestration microalgae are currently in the spotlight, especially in renewable energy technologies sector. The majority of studies focus their attention on microalgae cultivation with respect to biomass production. Fuel produced from algal biomass can contribute to reducing consumption of conventional fossil fuels and be a remedy for a rising energy crisis and global warming induced by air pollution. Some authors opt for possibilities of using sewage as a nutrient medium in algae cultivation. Other scientists go one step further and present concepts to introduce microalgal systems as an integral part of wastewater treatment plants. High costs of different microalgal harvesting methods caused introduction of the idea of algae immobilization in a form of periphyton on artificial substrates. In the present study the attention has focused on possibilities of using waste materials as substrates to proliferation of periphyton in biologically treated sewage that contained certain amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus.

The study was undertaken to determine the composition of periphyton and its quantitative development during consecutive stages of wastewater treatment in a flow-type purification plant with the biological part serving as a modified Bardenpho system (Hajdow, Lublin, south-eastern Poland). The periphyton was sampled from the wastewater plant walls at all main stages of water purification. The following groups of organisms: algae, fungi, flagellates, testate amoeba, ciliates, rotifers, and nematodes were identified in the composition of periphyton. At the end of the purification process, the proportion of metazoa and protozoa in the periphyton of the successive chambers increased, while the abundance of flagellates declined. In all the sampling points studied, protozoa and metazoa formed the basis of the periphyton community and their proportion ranged from 75 to 95%.

Periphyton colonisation on artificial substrate (microscopic glass slides) was investigated from July to November 2007, in Lake Sakadas (Danube River floodplain Kopacki rit, Croatia). Two different stations were chosen due to different post - flood conditions. The aim of the study was to follow temporal changes of nematode community composition and trophic structure in relation to periphyton biomass and bacterial abundance. In bryozoan - dominated periphyton (Plumatella emarginata Allman, 1844) nematodes were represented by 86 and 87% of total associated invertebrate fauna at S1 and S2 respectively. Total nematode abundance (up to 600 ind. 10 cm[^-2] at one station and up to 1130 ind. 10 cm[^-2] at another station) correlated significantly with the abundance (meaured as CFUs - colony forming units) of copiotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria at one station (r = 0.963, 0.998, P <0.05) and with organic and inorganic content of periphyton at another station (r = 0.891, 0.899, P <0.05). Nematode trophic groups (epistrate feeders, chewers, detritus feeders and suction feeders) were equally developed at both stations except detritus feeders whose species richness and abundance were significantly higher at the S1. Epistrate feeders were the most abundant trophic group in nematode assemblages at both stations with Chromadorina bioculata being the dominant species. Change in dominance of epistrate feeders by chewers (Brevitobrilus stefanskii) and suction feeders (Crocodorylaimus sp.) coincided with the occurrence of flood pulse. Effect of flood pulse on nematode community structure was probably indirect, alterating concentration of dissolved oxygen which chromadorids are sensitive to. The structure of nematode community developed through time differs between investigated stations indicating high sensitivity to bacterial abundance, periphyton biomass and P. emarginata mats which made the habitat more diverse and patchy.

Periphyton communities were studied on several dominating macrophytes, Phragmites australis, Potamogeton lucens, and Nuphar lutea, in three different types of lakes. In soft-water mesotrophic Lake Mały Borek and in shallow, eutrophic Lake Gardno samples were collected about once every two months from April to November 2009. In eutrophic Szczecin Lagoon (the estuary of the Oder River), samples were only collected once in July. The aim of this paper was to determine the dry mass, the ash content, and the chlorophyll-a content of periphyton on a natural substratum, in order to determine the mass, the inorganicorganic status of periphyton, and the auto-heterotrophic character of this complex. The analyzed periphytic communities exhibited low dry mass at the beginning of the growth season, which increased with colonization period on the aquatic vegetation. The highest (but still low) values were achieved in autumn, which persisted, with small loss, until spring of the subsequent year. The differences in dry mass between each type of lake were small, but in the strongly eutrophic Szczecin Lagoon this index was slightly higher than in the other two water bodies. The highest dry mass was noted for periphyton dominated by Cordylophora caspia colonies overgrowing common reeds and for periphyton on Potamogeton lucens in Szczecin Lagoon. In shallow water bodies, such as Lake Gardno and Szczecin Lagoon, wind causes strong resuspension of sediments. This can explain the relatively high level of inorganic matter in dry mass of the periphyton in both water bodies. However, the small ash content in periphyton in Mały Borek may result from the soft-water character of this lake. The hetero-autotrophic status of the periphytic community prevailed throughout the study period in Gardno and Mały Borek lakes. The auto-heterotrophic status of periphyton was noted only in short periods of time in each lake.

Content available remote Hydrodynamics of aquatic ecosystems: spatial-averaging perspective
EN
Hydrodynamics of aquatic ecosystems is a relatively new, emerging multidis-ciplinary research area dealing with two key inter-connected issues: (i) physical in-teractions between flow and organisms (e.g., due to drag forces); and (ii) ecologi-cally relevant mass-transfer-uptake processes (e.g., due to molecular and turbulent diffusion). Owing to physical and biological complexity of boundary conditions in aquatic systems, the conventional hydraulic methodologies are often impracticable and new approaches are required. One of such approaches, the double-averaging methodology, is discussed with particular focus on flows over biologically-modified beds.

The examination of the composition and dynamics of periphytic communities took place in three lakes of similar morphometry . Lake Wielkowiejskie, Budzyńskie and Dębiniec, situated in the Wielkopolska region, (Western Poland). These lakes are typical macrophyte-dominated, shallow and polymictic water bodies. Periphyton was collected from two macrophyte-covered stations, including the rush vegetation station (Typha angustifolia L.) and the stonewort stand (Chara tomentosa L.) in each examined lake. The material was sampled three times in 2003, including the spring (April), summer (July) and autumn (September) seasons, from the same parts of the lakes. The aim of the study was to find out whether there is an influence of particular macrophyte species, differing spatially and morphologically and representing two different ecological types of aquatic vegetation, on the development of particular periphytic species. There was also an attempt at answering the question of what is more important in the structuring of the periphytic communities - the specific architecture of the macrophyte substratum or the physical-chemical features of a particular lake? The concentrations of chlorophyll a, TN, TP and TOC in water were higher in the Chara beds compared with theTypha stations in most cases. The Shannon-Weaver biodiversity index of periphytic algae revealed very high values in all lakes and amounted in the Typha and Chara stands to the mean values 4.68 and 3.87 respectively in Wielkowiejskie Lake, 3.32 and 4.39 in Budzyńskie Lake and 3.08 and 3.91 in Dębiniec Lake. Furthermore, the standardized index of evenness exhibited the greatest differentiation in the Typha station with the highest (0.76) in Wielkowiejskie and the lowest (0.52) in Dębiniec Lake The analysis of the growth-forms of periphytic communities showed slightly higher diversity of slowly moving and stalked diatoms in most cases at the Chara stations of all studied lakes. The similarity between periphytic communities in the Typha and Chara stands of the examined lakes, compared using the Ward method and Euclidean distance measure, revealed a stronger relationship within a particular habitat but not a lake. The clearest pattern of similarity grouping a particular habitat was obtained for the summer period, when macrophytes reached their optimum. The Jaccard similarity index confirmed the differentiation of both examined habitats, reaching the mean value of 0.34. Based on the biomass of single periphytic species, habitat selectivity for seven species was found. Significantly higher biomass was obtained in the case of the rush zone for only one algae species - Eunotia lunaris (Ehr.) Grun. In the Chara bed six species revealed significantly higher biomasses - Cosmarium regnelli Wille, Oocystis marssonii Lemm., Ulotrix zonata (Weber et Moor) Kutz., Scenedesmus acuminatus (Lagerh.) Chod., Merismopedia elegans A. Braun and Phacus orbicularis Hubner. The habitat preference of periphytic communities to different macrophyte species may be due to the environmental factors, including the specific architecture of a particular macrophyte substrate such as density or texture of the plant surface. Furthermore, seasonality, as well as physical-chemical parameters may structure periphytic communities within the littoral zone of lakes.

The presence of riparian vegetation is shown to affect both physical and biological properties of headwater streams. Riparian vegetation mediates food resource availability for macroinvertebrates and fish within streams through addition of allochthonous material such as leaves, woody debris and terrestrial invertebrates. Riparian shade can also reduce biomass and production of autochthonous algae. The potential role of riparian vegetation in enhancing biodiversity and productivity of headwater streams is discussed, with reference to improving salmonid fish stocks in the headwater streams of Ireland and Great Britain.

Content available remote Periphytic ciliates in littoral zone of three lakes of different trophic status
EN
Periphytic ciliate communities were investigated in three lakes of different trophic status of the Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lake District (Eastern Poland). Observations were made of the periphyton growing on glass-slides. Samples were taken from April to November 2000-2001. Once a month, four periphyton samples were collected in littoral zone. Seventy three ciliate taxa occurred in the studied lakes. The biggest number, 60 species, was found in eutrophic lake, a little less, 55 species, in mesotrophic lake and the least, 49 species, in dystrophic lake. The lowest density was observed in mesotrophic lake and it was 13x103 ind. m-2, being a little higher in dystrophic lake - 16x103 ind. m-2, and the highest - 20x103 ind. m-2 in eutrophic lake. All of the studied lakes were generally dominated by ciliates belonging to the order Cyrtophorida (Chilodonella uncinata Ehrenberg 1983) constituted >30% of the total numbers. In all lakes bacterivorous ciliates occurred in the highest numbers (>50%), while algivorous and histophagous . in the lowest (<5%). In the eutrophic and dystrophic lakes the proportion of omnivorous and predatory species was high. The number of significant correlations differed among lakes. In mesotrophic lake the correlation between ciliates abundance and total organic carbon was found. In eutrophic lake total number of ciliates was positively correlated with the conductivity, TP and TOC. In dystrophic lake the correlations between ciliates abundance and abiotic parameters were not observed. In mesotrophic and dystrophic lakes the content of organic matter positively correlated with the biomass of ciliates, while in eutrophic lake conductivity showed positive correlation with their biomass.

Studies on periphyton of Crinium plants were conducted in the estuary (New Calabar River) of the Niger Delta at 4 different locations during the two major seasons (rainy and dry season). Periphyton samples were collected from an area (of 2 cm by 2 cm) in 3 sets of 3 replicates for biomasses (AFDW-ash free dry weight and chlorophyll a) and for numerical abundance. Physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity, hardness and salinity were also collected from the respective stations. Temperature was considerably uniform but conductivity, hardness and salinity showed increasing graduation in concentration down stream. A total of 110 periphyton species were recorded with diatoms constituting 54% of the occurring species followed by Euglenophyta (21%0, Chlorophyta (17%), Cyanophyceae (6%) and Rhodophyta (1.8%). There were strong similarities in the values obtained for species richness, periphyton abundance, and chlorophyll a, AFDW (ash free dry weight) for wet and dry season indicating no seasonal influence. However, the periphyton abundance, chlorophyll a and ash free dry weight distribution suggested strongly influence by the salinity gradient. The values for periphyton abundance ranged from 2621 ([plus-minus] 168.5) to 3452.8 ([plus-minus] 715.9) indiv. cm^-2. In addition, the combined mean values for chlorophyll a, and ash free dry weight in the system were 8.443 [plus-minus] 2.51 mg cm^-2 and 0.32 [plus-minus] 0.07 g cm^-2, respectively.

Biomass and productivity of the main autotrophic communities, and their contribution to total lake primary production, were studied in two shallow, polymictic lakes of the Karelian Isthmus (north-west Russia). Both lakes are highly productive but with contrasting contributions from macrophytes and algae. In Lake Rakovoe, with very large catchment and high external P loading, macrophytes are estimated to occupy 60% of its area and produce 106 g C m^-2 or 63% of the lake's annual primary production. In Lake Vishnevskoe with high TP content in lake water, determined by internal loading, phytoplankton is the main producer of organic matter; it produces 178 g C m^-2 or 85% of total annual production. The Conditions which determine different types of primary production composition are discussed.

Concentrations of copper, zinc, manganese, iron, cadmium and lead were investigated in chosen mollusc species from the Zegrzyński Reservoir (Central Poland) against the background of metal content in water, seston, bottom sediments, macrophytes, periphyton, and detritus. These concentrations were generally comparable to values reported from environments slightly contaminated with heavy metals. Relatively small interspecific variation in accumulation of non-essential metals (Pb, Cd) distinctly lower than in the case of essential metals resulted mainly from the lack of regulation of their level in an organism. It is conducive to molluscs application in bioindication of environmental contamination with Pb and Cd.

Stosunkowo małe zróżnicowanie gatunkowe kumulacji metali ksenobiotycznych (Pb i Cd) w badanych ślimakach i małżach (dużo mniejsze, niż w przypadku metali biofilnych) wynikające głównie z braku regulacji poziomu tych pierwiastków w organizmie sprzyja wykorzystaniu mięczaków w bioindykacji skażenia badanego ekosystemu ołowiem i kadmem.-
