The existing state of the pedestrian spaces available in the city of Lviv is analyzed by a combination of two methods: a sociological survey of citizens and a cartographic analysis of the trajectory of pedestrian movement by the city. The article describes the results of respondents' survey concerning the comfort and functionality of the pedestrian spaces of Lviv. The model of organization of the city pedestrian spaces is developed.

Istniejący stan dostępnych przestrzeni dla pieszych w mieście Lwów jest analizowany za pomocą połączenia dwóch metod: badania socjologicznego mieszkańców miasta i analizy kartograficznej trajektorii ruchu pieszego przez miasto. Artykuł opisuje wyniki badań ankietowych dotyczących komfortu i funkcjonalności przestrzeni dla pieszych we Lwowie. Opracowano model organizacji miejskich przestrzeni dla pieszych.

Small towns of Lviv region possess large but undeveloped potential for the formation of architectural attractiveness of environment. The issue of arrangement and functioning of pedestrian spaces is of particular importance for such settlements. Despite of large cities, there is a unique possibility for small towns to sightsee using waking tours. This is particularly important for transit towns, where waking tour may also become a pleasant rest during a trip. Such towns require comfortably equipped pedestrian routes including observation decks and informative means of visual communication, elements of architectural and landscape design, which are able to play the role of the major attraction object for the town visitors.

This article presents the study of the semiotic approach to the organization of both visible and invisible signs, by which the pedestrian is daily confronted in different environments of the city. Article starts with retrospective of the scientific studies of city‘s semiotic dimension beginning from Kevin Lynch and up to such contemporaries as Umberto Eco, Alexendros Lagopoulos and others. The article helps to consider the denotational and the connotational functions of urban semiotics. This text highlights the difference between the semiotic perception of the city by pedestrian and a person that uses some type of vehicle. Analysis of the change in treating the city’s semiotic domain in preindustrial, industrial and postindustrial periods helps to capture the negative aspects of this process. This provides us with possibility to detect the challenges and to define the preconditions for creation of the comfortable and rich pedestrian environment of the city.

Artykuł dotyczy problemów związanych z kształtowaniem miejskich przestrzeni pieszych w małych zespołach mieszkaniowych. Autor przedstawia założenia ideowe związane z kształtowaniem zrównoważonych zespołów mieszkaniowych z punktu widzenia pieszego poruszającego się w przestrzeni miejskiej. "Pieszy w przestrzeni miasta" - taki temat otrzymali studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego. Celem było między innymi uzyskanie nowych interesujących wizji i optymalnych rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych na miarę drugiej dekady dwudziestego pierwszego wieku. Artykuł prezentuje dziesięć najlepszych nagrodzonych studenckich projektów oraz dwa projekty dyplomowe inżynierskie, które potwierdzają tezę, że małe zrównoważone zespoły mieszkaniowe rozwiązane funkcjonalno-przestrzennie w oparciu o ruch pieszy wspomagany rowerowym oraz piesze wnętrza urbanistyczne są zespołami przyjaznymi środowisku mieszkaniowemu pod względem zdrowia mieszkańców oraz związków z naturą. W zakresie kształtowania przestrzeni pieszych pojawiły się tendencje zmierzające w kierunku zapewnienia dominacji ruchu pieszego w miejskich przestrzeniach oraz podniesienia rangi pieszych przestrzeni społecznych i publicznych w funkcjonowaniu oraz kompozycji miasta.

The article is devoted to problems connected with shaping urban pedestrian spaces in small residential complexes. The author presents the ideological foundations connected with forming sustainable residential complexes from the perspective of a pedestrian moving around the urban space. "Pedestrian in the Urban Space" – that was a topic given to students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, Chair of Housing Environment. The goal was – without limitations – to obtain new interesting visions and optimal functional and spatial solutions, appropriate for the second decade of the 21st century. This article presents ten best awarded students’ designs and two Engineer diploma designs, which confirm the thesis that small sustainable residential complexes solved in functional and spatial terms basing on the pedestrian traffic supported by the cycling traffic and pedestrian urban interiors are complexes which are friendly towards the housing environment in terms of the residents’ health and their bonds with nature. In the scope of shaping pedestrian spaces, tendencies have appeared aiming towards securing the prevalence of the pedestrian traffic in urban spaces and increasing the rank of social and public pedestrian spaces in the functioning and composition of a city.

Przestrzenie piesze są bardzo istotnym czynnikiem rozwoju miast. Ich istotą jest odpowiednie zagospodarowanie i umieszczone tam funkcje. Najbardziej atrakcyjne są ciągi piesze, które stają się jedną z głównych atrakcji miast. Deptaki, promenady, ciągi i place piesze otoczone zabudową i tonące w zieleni to chętnie odwiedzane miejsca. Pieszo-jezdnie, jeżeli są odpowiednio zagospodarowane, to również można zaliczyć do przestrzeni pieszych.

Pedestrian spaces are very significant development factors of cities. The key is the proper land arrangement and located functions. The most attractive are pedestrians walks as a one of main attractions of the cities. The walks, promenades and squares surrounded by buildings and flowing into greenery are very likely visited places. Properly arranged pedestrian streets are also a part of pedestrian spaces.
