Artykuł dotyczy początków naszej wiedzy o naukach przyrodniczych, głównie geologii i jej związkach z pedagogiką, Analizie poddane zostały niektóre dzieła Jana Amosa Komeńskiego (1592 —1670), wybitnego dydaktyka, filozofa oraz teologa. Podobnie jak większość ówczesnych uczonych, obejmował swymi opisami całość otaczającej rzeczywistości, a zatem również nauki o Ziemi. O ile jednak Jego osiągnięcia w dydaktyce, dzisiaj na nowo są odkrywane i wzbudzają ogólny entuzjazm, o tyle Jego poglądy na zagadnienia przyrodnicze nie mogą wzbudzać entuzjazmu. Tym niemniej przekazywane, niekiedy z drugiej ręki informacje z zakresu geologii, geografii, a nawet górnictwa, wzbogacają naszą obecną wiedzę o ówczesne poglądy na temat powstawania niektórych skał i minerałów oraz ich charakterystycznych cech, a także zastosowania.

This paper presents the origins of our knowledge on natural sciences, mainly those concerning geology and its relations with pedagogics. Some works of the eminent educator, philosopher and theologist, Jan Amos Komenski (1592 — 1670) have been analyzed. Like many contemporary scientists, he was encompassing the whole reality, including Earth sciences. As long as his achievements in didactics are nowadays coming into light, still arousing enthusiasm, his views on natural science issues can't be admired. On the other hand, the transferred information, sometimes second-hand information in the field of geology, geography and even mining industry is enriching our knowledge on the opinions of how some rocks and minerals were forming, what characteristics did they take and for what application did they serve.
