Since at least the 1960s, the average length of stay in German hospitals has been declined. Early discharge can cause health risks for the patient and incurs cost risks for health insurers. Otherwise, a shorter length of stay can also indicate more efficient and better care in hospitals. The aim of this research project is therefore to investigate whether the decreasing length of stay has an effect on the quality of care provided by hospitals and whether a shorter length of stay in inpatient care results in an increase in follow-up outpatient care. Routine data will be used.
