The process of designing technical objects involves determination of geometrical parameters that characterize a given device. When device operation is described by differential equations, an inverse problem brings difficulties, as geometrical values being sought condition the solution to the problem. Vortex separators, used for removal of suspension from storm wastewater are usually designed by the ‘criterion method’. Firstly, a critical particle is distinguished such that bigger particles are removed from wastewater stream, whereas smaller particles stay in the stream. Next, by comparing values of major forces acting on the critical particle at the most unfavourable point within the separator (usually at outflow cross-section), a force balance is made. The resulting algebraic relation becomes the design criterion.

The paper compares different erosion models. The calculations were carried out in a selected flow system, and results were compared with experimental results of this system. The motion of gas phase was described by Reynolds equations and the particle trajectory was calculated by using Lagrange's method. The simplifications and the different ranges of models' application do not allows us to state which model assures correct results in complicated conditions of flow. For that reason was performed research for a part of the dust system in BP-1150 boiler.

In this work numerical analysis is used to carry out a parametric study of two-phase flow water-gasoil in a compact cyclonic separator (CCS). The study is oriented to produce a set of range parameters that may be used as a guide to control and manage multiphase mixtures separation with application to the gas industry, especially gas turbines. The cylindrical geometry under study has an aspect ratio of R=2.5 (where R=height/diameter). The CCS has two exits: one on the top for light liquid flow and one tangentially located in the bottom for heavy liquid flow. A finite volume approach has been employed with body-fitted coordinates in a 3-D solution of the liquid-liquid cyclonic flow. The turbulence was resolved using a RNG model, while the interactions between each component of the flow were addressed using a slip mixture model. The mixture under study is immiscible, and limited to the composition between 0.3 and 0.7 for water and consequently, from 0.7 to 0.3 for gasoil. The results indicate that the separation is sensitive to exist pressures, viscisity of light component gasoil and bubble size of the gasoil.

The author has applied the laser sheet technique to acquire velocity fields and mass flows at the outlet of nozzle system, used for introducing limestone particles into a power boiler for a desulfurization process. This brings an effect in the form of multiexposure pictures, called specklegrams, which record single particle trajectories or their agglomerates in selected areas of the flow. On the basis of this the parameters of velocity field can be estimated. The author proposes a new approach to quantitative analysis of the specklegrams. It enables one to combine correlation processing with scanline particle tracking.

Zastosowanie techniki noża świetlnego w analizie trójwymiarowych pól prędkości ziaren. Autor zastosował technikę noża świetlnego do rejestracji pól prędkości i przepływów masowych przy wylocie dyszy służącej do wprowadzania sorbentu wapniowego do kotła energetycznego w procesie odsiarczania spalin. Efektem są wieloekspozycyjne obrazy zwane speklogramami, rejestrujące pojedyńcze tory cząstek lub ich aglomeratów w wybranych strefach przepływu. Na tej podstawie oszacować można parametry pola prędkości. Analiza jakościowa speklogramów może zostać przeprowadzona za pomocą zaproponowanego przez autra algorytmu, będącego połączeniem tradycyjnychmetod korelacyjnych oraz techniki obrotowej linii skanującej.
