The intensity distributions near the focus for radially polarized Bessel–Gaussian beam with conical phase by a high numerical aperture objective are computed based on the vector diffraction theory. Results show that the circular focal spot can be changed from one to two on the focal plane by adjusting the truncation parameter β. By increasing the phase modulation parameter L, the focal pattern appeared focal shift. According to the intensity distribution, the forces acting on a particle are calculated. The stability of particle trapping is analyzed. It is shown that a tightly focused radially polarized Bessel–Gaussian beam with conical phase is applicable to trapping, separating and transporting of particles.

This paper presents the modeling approaches and results of numerical investigations into particle separation in a production-scale industrial centrifugal air separator. The gaseous phase was modeled using an Eulerian formulation, while the particle phase was modeled using a Lagrangian particle tracking approach. Two-way coupling between continuous and disperse phase was included and turbulence modeled using the realizable k-ε model. The resulting comprehensive system model provides correct predictions of the power consumption and of pressure losses in the device over the full operation range, and proved ability of accurately predicting the size-dependent particle separation efficiencies down to nominal particle sizes of 2 µm.

The improvement of the cyclone performance is still a subject of many scientific investigations. One of the method is the use of additional gas extraction. The paper presents a comparison between two basic cases, namely when an additional (part of the) gas is extracted through a nozzle located in the lower part of the cyclone and when the gas is split into two parts in the cyclone vortex finder. The case comparison was based on the results of the CFD calculations. The RANS equations with the RSM turbulence model has been used for the gas flow analysis. The Lagrangian method is employed to track the particle motion and calculate the particle separation efficiency in the cyclone. This study shows that the extraction of a suitable quantity of gas in a proper manner facilitates the improvement of the total cyclone efficiency.

The paper presents the results of investigations on a cyclone with additional gas extraction. The experiments were performed in the cyclone with a diameter of 0.2 m equipped with a truncated counter-cone situated in the dust bin inlet. The gas stream flowing through the counter-cone was 10 and 20% of the gas supplied to the cyclone. The separation efficiencies and pressure loss were measured. The experiment showed that the extraction of gas by the counter-cone deteriorated the cyclone efficiency and forcing the outflow of gas through the counter-cone requires the use of an additional outlet fan.
