Compact single-family housing generated by parametric design - search for optimal, sustainable or smart densities

Single-family housing - the form of residential buildings expected by the society is often inconsistent with the theoretical optimum form of housing that is recommended in urban theories and ideas. Research indicates that most Poles want singlefamily housing, while its density is low in comparison with multi-family housing which provides a more compact city. The paper identifies the thesis to what degree it is possible to develop a compact city with single-family housing. The authors verify how parametric design may be useful in urban design and spatial planning. The purpose of the article is to discuss the possibility to generate single-family housing estates’ projects using the parametric tool of the Grasshopper program. The authors demonstrate how parameter tool-supported designing may be useful for better effectiveness of using space. The research used a script by Dawid Kątny, developed for the purposes of his diploma thesis, in which he attempted parametric variants and optimization. The paper describes the issue of “density vs quality of life” in quantitative terms. Quantitative density variants can be used in analysis for future smart and intelligent cities’ development.

Oprogramowanie jest jednym z narzędzi stworzonych do rozwiązywania zagadnień związanych z kształtowaniem architektury. Jego głównym celem jest upraszczanie prac projektowych oraz tworzenie nowych możliwości, które są niedostępne przy wykorzystywaniu innych technik tradycyjnych. Szczególnie widoczne jest to w budynkach projektowanych i realizowanych w ostatniej dekadzie XX i pierwszej dekadzie XXI wieku. Obiekty te są poligonem doświadczeń projektowych dla architektów, którzy będą mogli tworzyć przestrzenie doskonałe w zakresie zastosowań technicznych, jak najbardziej przyjaznych użytkownikowi.

Software is one of the tools created to solve various issues connected with creation of architecture. Its main aim is to simplify design works and create new possibilities which are inaccessible using other traditional techniques (it involves great amount of labour). It is particularly visible and more than ever advanced in buildings designed and built in the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st one. They have a chance to become a range of designing experiences for architects who will be able to create space, not only beautiful but most of all perfect in the field of technical applications and by all means user-friendly.
