Climate change-oriented design: Living on the water. A new approach to architectural design

The paper deals with the digital architecture concept which is trying to introduce a new spatial language into the context of water urbanism, using nature as a model, measure and mentor. The first part analyses Biomimetics with its design strategies and methods. The Problem-Based Approach (designers look to nature for solutions) and the Solution-Based Approach (biological knowledge influences human design) are defined here. In the second part of the research, the authors present selected examples to the topic. This case study has demonstrated that a new approach to architectural design is emerging. This approach redefines the process of architectural design, understood not as the traditional shaping of the object's form, but as a compilation of various factors resulting from changeable climate characteristics and ecology. The conclusions emphasize that not only the contemporary understanding of ecology should be changed, but also the way architects approach the built environment, especially in the aquatic environment.

Computational design for the preservation and enhancement of historical heritage. A prefabricated covering prototype for archaeological sites in rural context

In Italy, many archaeological sites in peri-urban and rural areas are in a deep state of neglect, with unprotected remains and no prospects of enhancement. The paper shows the results of a study aimed at developing a parametric prototype of a prefabricated coverage, to be adapted to various conditions. The Roman Domus of the Acropolis of Populonia in the archaeological park of Baratti and Populonia in Tuscany was chosen as case study. The prototype was parametrically realized using heuristic algorithms based on natural selection (Genetic Algorithms), associated with multi-objective optimization criteria. The algorithm was conceived to optimize the support pillars’ position and the visiting path, in relation to the main points of interest of the archaeological site. The final product consists of a wooden structural covering with 11 steel circular-section pillars, completed with a casing made of wood slats and opaque white PVC sheets.

Uwagę koncentruje się na projektowaniu parametrycznym z użyciem narzędzi cyfrowych i ich roli w architekturze XXI wieku. Artykuł przedstawia historię rozwoju parametrycznych narzędzi projektowania i ich zastosowania w projektowaniu architektonicznym. Objaśnia, czym jest projektowanie parametryczne, jakimi narzędziami może posługiwać się architekt i jakie może osiągać rezultaty. Obecnie projektowanie parametryczne stało się nowym paradygmatem estetycznym, od którego wymaga się symulowania nowego rodzaju struktur. Projektowanie parametryczne jest tu definiowane jako proces oparty na myśleniu algorytmicznym, który umożliwia wyrażanie parametrów i zasad, przez które są definiowane, kodowane i wyjaśniane związki między zamierzeniem a odpowiedzią projektową. Proces ten znajduje uzasadnienie w projektowaniu architektonicznym wtedy, gdy zachodzi taka relacja pomiędzy elementami projektu, która wymaga manipulowania informacją dotyczącą złożonej geometrii formy i jej struktury. Projektowanie parametryczne nie jest nową koncepcją i zawsze stanowiło części projektowania architektonicznego.

The paper focuses on parametric design with digital tools and their role in architecture of the 21st century. It presents the history of the development of parametric design tools and their application in architectural design. The paper clarifies what is parametric design, what tools can use the architect and what results can achieve. Today, parametric design has become a new aesthetical paradigm: architectonic requirements have stimulated the search for new types of structures. Parametric design is defined as a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response. Parametric design is a paradigm in design where the relationship between elements is used to manipulate and inform the design of complex geometries and structures. Parametric design is not a new concept and has always formed a part of architectural design.
