The paper deals with diagnostic methods helpful in conducting surveys of building structures aimed at evaluating their usability. Attention is drawn to the fact that diagnostic methods need to be used as part of such surveys since they increase the reliability and quality of the evaluation made. A concise survey, classification and description of selected diagnostic methods are presented. The focus is on the state-of-the-art nondestructive methods highly suitable for the purpose. Examples of their practical application are provided. It is emphasized that the current development of test methods is oriented towards the evaluation of other than strength characteristics of members and structures. It is pointed out that this development clearly tends towards the design of equipment enabling one to obtain precise images of the “inside” of the investigated member. Owing to this the workmanship of the particularmembers of a building structure and of the whole structure can be more fully evaluated, which is great consequence for their durability.
