The article presents the biggest disasters of oil tankers and challenges created by those events for the security of coastal states. The paper shows the evolution of international and maritime law especially in the context of the raising threat of disastrous oil pollution. The problems of the owner and carrier liability for ecological catastrophe are shown in detail. The author also presents the controversies attached to unlimited liability that has been practically established by American Oil Pollution Act.
