Assessment of glycol antifreeze to combustion engines in the perspective of using them in the infrastructure HVAC systems

Corrosion inhibitors in the antifreeze include both inorganic and organic compounds. Organic additives applied in the antifreeze usually form thinner protective coatings. In spite of this fact, it is believed that they protect the exposed surfaces against corrosion more efficiently than fluids with inorganic additives. This work investigates whether the effects on the steel surface occurring due to the antifreeze meet key normative requirements. Microscopic imaging was used to identify the alterations in the surface invisible in the macro scale. The tests aimed to evaluate the potential of the antifreeze intended for combustion engines in the perspective of applying them in HVAC systems.

Inhibitorami korozji w płynach niskokrzepnących mogą być związki nieorganiczne lub organiczne. Dodatki organiczne w płynach niskokrzepnących przeważnie tworzą cieńsze powłoki ochronne, mimo to uznaje się, że skuteczniej zabezpieczają narażone powierzchnie niż płyny z dodatkami nieorganicznymi. W niniejszej pracy zbadano efekty na powierzchni stali pojawiające się pod wpływem płynów niskokrzepnących spełniających kluczowe wymagania normatywne. Zastosowano mikroskopowe obrazowanie, które pozwoliło zidentyfikować zmiany powierzchni niewidoczne w skali makro. Badania miały na celu ocenę potencjału płynów niskokrzepnących do silników spalinowych w perspektywie ich wykorzystania w instalacjach grzewczo-chłodząco-wentylacyjnych.

The paper presents extensive description of the requirements for low freezing engine coolants covered by Polish mandatory standard and technical requirements WT-ITS.3/94-ZLG. Moreover, discussion of the laboratory tests results, for samples of low freezing coolants from operational tests, concerning physical, chemical and corrosive characteristics according to ASTM D 2847-99 requirements has been presented.

W referacie przedstawiono zagadnienia ekologii i ochrony środowiska związane z eksploatacją płynów niskokrzepnących do układów chłodzenia silników spalinowych. Przedstawiono podział ekologicznych płynów ze względu na ich skład oraz ich właściwości i metodyki badawcze. Zwrócono uwagę na toksyczność stosowanych glikoli i inhibitorów.

The aspects of ecology and environmental protection linked with exploitation of engine antifreeze coolants were presented in the article. The division of ecological antifreezes according to their components as well as their properties and test methods was presented. The attention was paid to toxicology of used glycols and inhibitors.
