Obiekt budowlany zwykle stanowi barierę wizualną w krajobrazie - zasłania horyzont i zajmuje teren. Architektura sztucznej topografii, anektując teren, jednocześnie go oddaje. Czyni to w różnorodny sposób, upodabniając się jednakże do charakterystycznych postaci ukształtowania terenu - geologicznych form krajobrazowych: płaskowyżów, wzniesień, gór, dolin, grot, jarów. Swoim nawiązaniem do krajobrazowych form terenowych oraz maskowaniem kubatury pod naturalnymi dywanami z ziemi, zieleni czy wody, architektura, tracąc swoje konotacje semiotyczne, staje się elementem natury. Tym samym przywraca i kreuje równowagę wizualną i kubaturową w krajobrazie naturalnym i kulturowym.

Security is a big problem that concerns many aspects. Security is one of the important elements of building environment. In our cities many housing estates are enclosed with very high fences, watched by the bodyguards. In this paper, some new ways of shaping housing environment that assures security without the necessity of erecting high fences are performed. This aim can be achieved by suitable urban estate solutions, street and green terrain shaping.

The goal of this article is to warn Polish society about the effects of contemporary transformations on the public environment. It is a form of a manifesto, referring to the current fragmentation of public space and its further social segregation. It is also a trial to compare Polish society of the individuals and Dutch massconsuming society I grew up in. The text is my personal opinion on current conditions of urban space, as well as on the obligation of the public space users towards one another, and the designers towards the inhabitants of their designs.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ostrzeżenie społeczeństwa polskiego przed wpływem współczesnych transformacji na domenę publiczną w miastach. Wypowiedź ta jest formą manifestu, odnoszącego się do obserwowanej obecnie fragmentacji przestrzeni miejskiej i wynikającej z niej społecznej segregacji oraz próbą porównania polskiego społeczeństwa indywidualistów z holenderskim społeczeństwem masowej konsumpcji, w którym przyszło mi wzrastać. Zaprezentowany tekst jest moją prywatną opinią na temat warunków, jakie oferowane są ludziom przez współczesne przestrzenie publiczne, a także zobowiązań, jakie powinni mieć użytkownicy tych przestrzeni w stosunku do siebie, a projektanci w stosunku do odbiorców ich twórczości.

Czynnik obronności, który w znacznej mierze decydował o lokacji i kształcie historycznych osad, pozostaje współcześnie istotną determinantą struktury miast globalnych. Skrajnym przejawem troski o własne bezpieczeństwo stają się odseparowane enklawy osiedli strzeżonych. Od początku swego istnienia w Polsce cieszą się one olbrzymią popularnością. "Sukces" tego modelu zamieszkiwania wynika nade wszystko z poczucia elitarności, realizowanej poprzez ideę grodzenia. Strach przed intruzami z zewnątrz wydaje się tu wtórnym czynnikiem. Jednak sukcesywnie i skutecznie podnoszony przez sprzedawców systemów zabezpieczeń skutkuje coraz bardziej wyrafinowanymi środkami ochrony polskich "gated communities".

The defence factor which largely determined the location and shape of historic settlements remains a major determinant of the structure of contemporary global cities. Separated enclaves of guarded housing estates are becoming an extreme sign of their inhabitants’ concern for their own safety. Since they first appeared in Poland, gated communities have enjoyed enormous popularity. The success of this housing model rests above all on the feeling of exclusiveness, achieved through the idea of fencing off. Fear of intruders from the outside appears to be a secondary factor. However, the steadily increasing level of fear effectively fuelled by the sellers of security systems results in more and more sophisticated means of protection of Polish "gated communities".

The political and economic changes in recent years in Poland have resulted in a rapid development of metropolies, but also in the polarization of the society, which has been reflected in architecture. The phenomenon of gated communities has emerged, that is, groups of high-standard dwellings equipped with gates, security guards and security equipment. In Warsaw alone there are currently more than 400 gated communities. The main drives behind the spread of gated communities are the need to feel safe, prestige, and fashion that seems to sprawl at a fast pace. The phenomenon of gated communities has diverse consequences, in both the social and urban context. The process of gating large areas within the urban membrane leads to its dismembering and degradation. Other negative effects include district homogenisation, formalization of social relations, elimination of neighbourly relations, immobilisation of the public life and social segregation. Perphaps the way to ensure, on the one hand, accessibility, and, on the other, the perception of safety for the city dwellers would be to provide them with other choices of new type of dwellings, such as temporary closed residence, or "secured by design" habitation, which can become an alternative to pure-play gating.
