Wide Tuning Range Quadrature VCO Using Coupled Multivibrators

Two emitter-coupled multivibrators are coupled to produce a quadrature current-/voltage controlled oscillator with wide frequency tuning range (which can be wider than one decade). The tuning range, the achievable frequency of oscillation, and the synchronization transients are investigated by simulation. The influence of mismatches of timing capacitors and charging currents on synchronization is also investigated. The results of simulations for different couplings show that one can find a design with low quadrature error, low phase noise and wide tuning range. This confirms the potential of the proposed VCO for RJF applications.

Przedstawiono wybrane aspekty projektowania układów RF. Omówiono metodykę projektowania i stosowane narzędzia symulacyjne. Na przykładzie wzmacniacza niskoszumnego oraz oscylatora na pasmo 2,4 GHz pokazano wpływ odchyłek parametrów procesów technologicznych oraz elementów pasożytniczych wynikających z topogratii i obudowy na właściwości projektowanych układów.

In this paper some aspects of designing Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits was considered. The simulation tools and method of designing were discussed. The influences of process fluctuations, on-chip parasitics and package parasitics on low noise amplifier and voltage controlled oscillator (working at 2.4 GHz) characteristics were presented.
