The paper presents the tactics and the scope of anti-ice protection on Polish main rivers, purpose of which is protection of towns and villages situated near the river against ice-jam flood creation. There have been shown the usual methods used during the ice-breaking actions on the Vistula and the Odra rivers, success of which is the condition for successful ice-breaking on the Włocławek storage reservoir and on the Warta and the Noteć rivers. The structures of ice-breaking action management and their areas of responsibilities has been described together with the organized systems of specialized observation and data processing services having deciding impact on the right choice of ice-breaking action's beginning, its later running and costs. There has been also presented the special technical equipment for anti-ice protection, quantities and types of ice- -breakers taking part in it and system of radio communication providing real-time connection with all stations (on shore and on vessels) as well units participating in action. At the end of the paper there is described the legal status of ice-breakers' owners and the threats connected with their privatisation or liquidation.
