A robust technique for surface reconstruction from orthogonal slices

The problem of surface reconstruction from sets of planar slices representing cross sections through 3D objects is presented. The final result of surface reconstruction is always based on the correct estimation of the structure of the original object and on the visual quality of the resultant surface. This paper is a case study of the structure reconstruction and the surface formation problems. We present a new approach, which is based on considering mutually orthogonal sets of slices. A new method for surface reconstruction from orthogonal slices is described, and the benefit of orthogonal slices is also discussed. The properties and sample results are presented as well. Przedstawiono próbę sformułowania miar ilościowych do oceny kształtu bulw ziemniaka. Przedstawiono próbę sformułowania miar ilościowych do ocenykształtu bulw ziemniaka. Zaproponowano dwa wskaźniki do oceny kształtu, których koncepcja oparta jest na analizie parametrów przekrojów ortogonalnych bulw. W pierwszym przypadku, wskaźnik sformułowano jako stosunek długości linii brzegowej rzeczywistego przekroju do obwodu teoretycznej płaszczyzny (elipsy), o identycznych z przekrojem rzeczywistym głównych wymiarach. Drugi wskaźnik wyrażono stosunkiem długości linii brzegowej przekroju do pola jego powierzchni. Zaproponowane wskaźniki poddano weryfikacji, porównując obliczone wartości wskaźników regularności kształtu dla wybranych odmian ziemniaka.

An attempt was made to formulate the quantitative measures to evaluating the shape of potato tubers. Two indices were proposed to shape evaluation; their concept was based on an analysis of orthogonal cross-section parameters of the tubers. In the first case the index was formulated as a length ratio of edgeline of the real cross-section to theoretical piane circumference of an ellipse identical in dimensions with the real cross-section. The second index was expressed by the length of cross-section circumference line to its surface area ratio. Proposed indices were werified by comparing calculated values of shape regularity indices for selected potato cultivars.
