Research background: Existence and development of companies strongly depend on their investments spending including capex expenditures. Regardless of scale of expenses an investment project should be analysed with regard to the risks involved, calculation of amount to be spent and probability of achieving expected effects. To realize this objective in a smooth and effective way a company should possess and use in practice procedures for analysis of investments projects – pre-decision control procedures. Purpose of the article: The aim of the presented paper is to show the advantages of possession by companies the procedures for analysis of investment projects and necessity for their usage in case of preparing a new investment. Even the simplest procedure enables to define potential risks which can occur in time. In addition, such a procedure allows to analyse technical, financial and personnel issues related to introducing a new technology and purchasing machinery equipment. Methods: The research method applied for preparing this article has been based on a survey addressed to business owners, financial managers and other persons involved in the process of analysis and acceptance of investment decisions in business units. The paper presents results of empirical research carried out by companies, mainly from Silesia region. The theoretical part is based on literature analyses. Findings & Value added: The empirical research did not confirm that companies using pre-decision control procedures for investment projects achieve their business and financial objectives more often than companies which do not have such procedures.

Content available remote Evaluation of FMEA methods used in the environmental management

Purpose: The aim of the study is to present a newly developed methodology for the E-FMEA analysis. The importance and implementation of the FMEA analysis to the effective management of the environment are discussed. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper the concepts of the E-FMEA methodology presented in the literature and proposed by the authors are presented. The developed conception is based on the FMEA method used in the quality management. Findings: The detailed analysis of the quality FMEA is described. A new approach to the E-FMEA analysis is discussed. Research limitations/implications: The paper presents the methodology for the FMEA analysis carrying out in relation to the environmental aspects. Practical implications: The result of the analysis and the developed E-FMEA methodology is a proposal of management tools for the manufacturing processes. The development tool would allow the management of the environmental aspects in the productive process in an efficient manner. The improvement of the environmental management using the developed E-FMEA tool allows to increase in the productive of the process in relation to the requirements of the law, maintaining the machinery and the equipment and their impact on the environmental aspects. Originality/value: The methodology of E-FMEA suggested in the paper is a part of the scope of the eco-management methods dedicated to the manufacturing processes.

W artykule skrótowo przedstawiono fakty dotyczące kształtowania się technologii i techniki Zakładów Azotowych w Tarnowie- Mościcach. Wskazano najbardziej znaczące dla kształtowania fabryki okresy: powstanie Państwowej Fabryki Związków Azotowych w Mościcach, okres tzw. Tarnowa II i okres po wejściu Azotów Tarnów na Giełdę Papierów Wartościowych. Dokonania ostatniego okresu są tylko zasygnalizowane, bowiem ich dynamizm trwa. Autor podkresla, że w 85-letniej historii Firmy bardzo ważni byli jej pracownicy, często wybitni specjaliści i znakomite osobowości, a zawsze ludzie bezgranicznie oddani Firmie.

This paper presents briefly the facts related to the development of technology and technique of Zakłady Azotowe in Tarnów-Mościce. It describes the most important periods for the factory formation such as: the establishment of the State Works of Nitrogen Compounds in Mościce, the period of so called Tarnów II and the present period after Azoty Tarnów debut on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The achievements from the latter period are only generalised as they are dynamic and still in progress. The author emphasises that the company workers, often outstanding specialists and remarkable personalities and always entirely devoted to the Company, were very important in the 85-year history of the Company.

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to elaborate using design approach to building Integrated Management Systems (IMS) of organization to trace their own and dependable way to business excellence. Design/methodology/approach: The basic theories used to achieve the aim are: system engineering and architecting, system integration by managing of the interactions among its elements and the social model of management. The theoretical scope of this paper is to find appropriate model of integration based on main principles of mentioned modern management disciplines. Findings: At the beginning of design process of IMS lays Quality Management System (QMS) structured in accordance with ISO 9000 which allows organizations to use recognizable management practice and select properly quality tools for improvement of their core business processes. Research limitations/implications: There are different ways and concepts of integration on the road to business excellence. Design approach enables organizations to find their own road to improvement of business performances by selecting properly tools and methods. Practical implications: As outcome, the authors recommend the graphical presented concept to organizations that have the ambition to join the path of business excellence. Originality/value: Results of this paper are intended for designers of management systems. Presented model sets framework of methodology for design process of IMS which is mainly new for managers.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Central and Eastern Europe at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s were characterised by many people exposed to hazardous working conditions. Statistics recorded a considerable increase in the number of occupational diseases. They also showed that it was more dangerous to work for a small company. The transition from planned to market economy has brought about an increase in the number of SMEs in Poland. Data on them are provided. The role of the Central Institute for Labour Protection in studying SMEs is presented. A pilot study of employers and employees is discussed.
