Newest improvements of High Temperature Superconductors (HTSC) regarding the increase of the critical current density JC and the field trapping capability most notably at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (LN2) encourage the application of this material in the field of electrical machines with highly improved performance data. HTSCs in the form of strands for excitation windings as well as HTSC-bulks may be taken into consideration for the machine constructions with an intensified energy conversion process. Hence these improved materials enable new and interesting design features, which are well adapted to the improved JC capability.
