Computer simulation techniques have been used in the issues of production for about 30 years. Due to the rapid technological progress in the field of IT and growing computing power of personal computers attractiveness of simulation still increases. The advantage of computer simulation is its repeatability. By setting a number of the model parameters and by assigning numerical settings we can repeat the same process many times which is impossible to achieve in the real world. All the manufacturing systems can be divided into two parts: process and discrete systems. The products of the process manufacturing once put together cannot be taken apart. Discrete manufacturing can be characterized by individual or separate unit production. The sensible use of simulation usually requires the knowledge of the theoretical background to discrete simulation such as probability distributions, the model building process including validation techniques and the design of experiments. This study aims to present method for improving the flow in discrete manufacturing in exemplary company of joinery. The main goal of the research was to identify the actual and potential problems inside of the manufacturing system. Large intermediate stocks, long throughput times, and variable bottlenecks are the most common kinds of problems that usually characterize such an environment. Furniture manufacturing is the complex process that consists of a few steps. The characteristics of the current manufacturing system in descriptive and schematic forms were presented. In the next stage the model of existing manufacturing system using the selected simulation software was developed. The model included such elements as: storages, works transport mean, assemblers, workstations, etc. The final step was to conduct a simulation experiment and draw conclusions. In this case, the method allowed to develop a computer simulation model that reflected the actual functioning of joinery company. The experiment conducted in conjunction with the simulation model provided detailed data for a thorough analysis of the flow in manufacturing. Some results of the simulation experiment were compared to the historic real company data and in this way the high quality of the simulation model was proven. This way the main barrier in obtaining the higher productivity level and the cause of excessive intermediate stocks were identified. Appropriate remedial steps leading to improve the flow in manufacturing, release of capacity reserve and reduce of stocks levels were proposed.
