The capability for operator protection in case of falling objects accidents is one of the most important criteria for cabin evaluation. For this reason, machines are equipped with falling-object protective structures (FOPS). There is a number of standards defining FOPS requirements depending on the machine class and mass. Engineer’s primary task at FOPS design phase is to develop such a structure that will meet the safety requirements. The results of cooperation of «AMKODOR» holding and The United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (UIIP NASB) on special machines FOPS design are presented in the current paper.

The time required for the development of machine tools can be reduced if computer-aided tools for product and process design are applied in the early stages of the product development process. This paper describes a prototype of a product development workplace for machine tools which combines computer tools for calculation, design, and assessment of machine tools with a module to support the structuring of operations in product development. In addition to functional requirements, the design of machine tools has to take into account effective safety measures following the latest European standards regarding the protection of operators. To support the design of machine tools complying with safety principles the product development workplace was extended by a "safety engineering" (SE) module. Central component of the SE system module is an integrated FEM calculation, analysing the material behavior of high-dynamically stressed safeguard components under standardized test conditions.
