A few small towns and many villages made up the Cracow suburbs since the medieval times up to the beginning of the 20th century. Eventually they have been incorporated into the city. A variety of the suburb townscapes vanished when the old Cracow centre had been surrounded by the new dwelling quarters with their uniform architecture and with the hundreds of thousands inhabitants devoided of a community spirit. Contemporary Cracow is the city too large and its urban structure is too complicated as to allow their inhabitants for an effective participation in the city council decisive processes. The inhabitants influence on the decisions in a general town planning scale is very limited. The evidences of an authentic self-government revival are noticeable just at the neighbourhood level. Usually there are the neighbourhoods from the very small territories of the city, for example from some particular streets or another small-scale dwelling areas. The spots of the local activity have emerged spontaneously in the different parts of Cracow, as well some of them used to vanish sooner or later. But these local initiatives have became to change the air of some parts of Cracow and thanks to them some of the city areas were defended from the suspect investments. The trend of the local communities activation is desirable as to do a balance for the politicians position in creating of a further development of the city. Probably the only authentic manifestations of the local community feelings in Cracow have references to the activity of the small local sports clubs. A great deal of the almost 80 existing clubs was set up some 80-90 years ago in circles of the traditional former suburb communities. Surprisingly, the clubs are still considered as the local identity symbols by the contemporary inhabitants of the mammoth dwelling quarters constructed in fact on the ruins of the traditional communities. The local sports clubs make up a kind of network spread all over the city area. It would be possible to take advantage of this network as a base for transforming the sports clubs into socio - cultural civic centers necessery for the new local communities enforcement.
