Despite solutions available in the Polish law system which could be used in conflictual situations connected with odour emission, the amount of odour complaints in Poland has been increasing. Currently applied legal solutions in Poland used in private-law and public-law ways in odour issues have been characterised. The results of analyses of available and developed technical solutions aiming to eliminate odour nuisance have been presented as well. Additionally, the results of research conducted in laboratory conditions and in chosen municipal waste management and industry facilities have been displayed. A conducted analysis pointed out the limited character of Polish legal solutions concerning odours. Therefore, the need to create an administrative and legal regulation dedicated directly to the preventing odour nuisance in Poland was emphasized. Such a regulation should include issues concerning, inter alia, emission, immision and technological standards.

The methods used to the identification of odour concentrations from public utility objects, under Polish legal regulations have been presented with exemplary results of measurements by the dynamic olfactometry and model calculations. The results of the study indicate the usefulness of the dynamic olfactometry in determining odour concentrations (from point and area emission sources located in public utility objects) suitable in odour emissions calculations. Based on results of such calculations, it is possible to determine odour concentrations in the receptor points and to evaluate olfactory impact range of considered objects, taking into account all types of odour sources affecting the quality of air in the area under study. Selected methods – as an alternative to field research: measurements in the grid and in the plume – can be less time and cost consuming but also require careful planning the number of samples and proper selection of representative sampling areas, especially in the case of the area sources.

The conditions have been examined under which selected groups of microorganisms might be applied to prevent or significantly reduce the generation of odour from the processing and storage of the wastewater sludge. A series of experiments were conducted on a semi-industrial scale, using effective microorganisms (EM) activated in molasses solutions. The analysis of the results showed that the biopreparation modified the biochemical processes most effectively when a structural material was added to the sludge. The processing of the sludge with added EM caused a 20–26% reduction in odour emissions, despite an increase in ammonia emissions. It also led to a higher dry matter content, which indicates a better dewatering ability of the sludge treated with EM. It can be concluded that the treatment of wastewater sludge with EM and the structural material when the C/N ratio is low can help achieve the desired goal of reducing the odour emission.

Przedstawiono obliczenia dotyczące rozprzestrzeniania się zapachów w atmosferze w pobliżu wytwórni produktów agrochemicznych z zastosowaniem polskiego modelu referencyjnego. Na podstawie otrzymanych wyników i określonych w projekcie Ustawy o przeciwdziałaniu uciążliwości zapachowej dopuszczalnych wartości stężeń zapachowych i częstości przekroczeń obliczono wymagany poziom redukcji emisji odorów oraz ustalono dopuszczalną jej wartość. Zaproponowano również możliwości ograniczenia emisji odorów w odniesieniu do wybranego obiektu.

Emissions of baked bread, noodle and EtOH smells from plants for prodn. of gluten, glucose and fructose syrups and EtOH for techn. purposes were detd. by olfactometry. Odour distribution models were developed and used for establishing the odour nuisance. Narrow range of EtOH smell impact was evidenced. The baked bread and noodle smells may be removed by thermal or catalytic combustion near to the emitors.

In this study are presented causes and prevention methods of the emergence in manhole and apartment buildings of disagreeable odors coming from sewerage networks. This paper is based on studies results and expertise performed for real objects. The effectiveness of the prevention methods has been confirmed in practice.

This paper proposes and presents research methodology aimed at identification of a group of industrial sources/odour emission sources and an assessment of their olfactory impact on humans. The paper proposes methodology of identification of industrial odour emission sources in terms of quantity, space and quality. Identification methods of odour emission sources depending on the type/nature of the emission sources as well as methods aimed at odour nuisance assessment were developed. Complementary to analysis and discussion are the results of olfactometric and field research as well as model tests, on the basis of which the range of applicability of selected methods in the olfactory assessment of industrial odour emission sources was defined. Finally, using there methods, it is possible to determine, for example, total odour emission from industrial plant, the range of the source's olfactory impact, odour concentration at the receptor point, frequency of odour presence in selected area and the level of odour nuisance as well as the influence of odours on the quality of life of the people living in areas adjacent to the industrial odorous gases emission source being analyzed.

Content available remote Evaluation of nuisance of odour from food industry
EN
An analysis of odour nuisance has been presented for a plant of food industry continuously and cyclically emitting pleasant odours. Odour emission was calculated based on odour concentration and volumetric flow rates of emitted gases. An indicatory model for odour propagation in air was used to evaluate the range of odour impact. The findings from questionnaire examinations made among inhabitants of housing estate in close vicinity of the plant were provided. Attention was paid to the need of classifying emissions from various sources based on hedonic quality of odours to determine the efficiency of odour emission removal.
