The largest industrial application so far have the gray cast irons which are characterized by low tensile and bending strength, while at the same time they have good ultimate comprehensive strength. Additionally, the fatigue strength of gray cast irons is comparatively low and they are only to some extend sensitive for the surface waters effects. Cast iron is the material, which is comparatively easy to be processed, and for this reason - it is not expensive. Brake discs are exploited in particularly hard conditions. They must be resistant both against the thermal fatigue and abrasion wearing (at dry friction) as well as against seizing, corrosion and mechanical load [1-3]. The gray cast iron, better than other materials, fulfills all the requirements necessary for making the material for the casts resistant against such tough conditions. This work reflects the researches aiming to define the quality of cast brake discs (ventilated and non-ventilated ones) upon a period of their exploitation in real conditions. The following researches were performed: evaluations of the disc surface condition, measurement of disc thickness, examination of run - out flank and metallographic analysis. In order to more detailed recognition of mechanisms and reasons of brake discs wearing in real conditions, one should conduct additional examinations: computer analysis of the microstructure, chemical composition analysis, etc., as well as study of the technology of their production in foundries, where they are manufactured [4]. By obtaining the full set of the mentioned above data one can draw final conclusions and remove causes of possible defects.

The developed design methodologies both the material and technological ones will make it possible to improve shortly the quality of materials from the light alloys in the technological process, and the automatic process flow correction will make the production cost reduction possible, and - first of all - to reduce the amount of the waste products. In the metal casting industry, an improvement of component quality depends mainly on better control over the production parameters. Castings were analysed in the paper of car engine blocks and heads from the Al-Si-Cu alloys of the AC-AlSi7Cu3Mg type fabricated with the "Cosworth" technological process. In this work the AC-AlSi7Cu3Mg alloy structure was investigated, of this alloy samples were cut of for structure analysis of the cylinder part as well of crankshaft of a fuel engine. The investigation shows a difference in the (phase) structure morphology as a result of cast cooling rate.

W referacie przedstawiono zakres stosowania odlewów w konstrukcji samochodów: głowice i kadłuby silników, wały wykorbione i rozrządcze, obudowy skrzyń przekładniowych i mostów napędowych, elementy zawieszenia. Na wykresach pokazano udział różnych tworzyw w budowie samochodów oraz zestawienia zmian w Polsce i na świecie w produkcji odlewów z żeliwa szarego i stopowego, sferoidalnego i ciągliwego, staliwa i metali nieżelaznych - w tym odlewów ze stopów magnezu. Zamieszczono przykłady ulepszenia konstrukcji odlewów dla uproszczenia procesu odlewania i poprawy ich właściwości eksploatacyjnych.

In thc articIe have been presented range of usage of foundings in cars construction: caps and trunks of engines, ram parts cranked and camshaft, casings of boxcs drive and of driving bridges, elements of suspension. On graphs have been showed participation different materials in cars construction and compositions changes in Poland and on world, of changes in production of foundings from cast iron grey and alloys, spheroid and ductile, cast steels and of non-ferrous metals - in this of foundings from alloys of magnesium. Have been placed examples of improvement of construction of foundings for reductions of process of pouring off and improvements their exploitations proprieties.

W pracy przedstawiono charakterystykę warunków eksploatacyjnych odlewów motoryzacyjnych wykonywanych z różnych rodzajów żeliwa. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na właściwy dobór odpowiednich gatunków żeliwa na określone (wybrane) odlewy motoryzacyjne, opierając się na podstawowych ich własnościach. W stopniu niezbędnym scharakteryzowano własności najczęściej stosowanych gatunków żeliwa. Poza tym przedstawiono kierunki i tendencje światowe stosowania żeliwa wysokojakościowego, żeliwa szarego stopowego, a przede wszystkim żeliwa sferoidalnego, m.in. o strukturze bainistyczno-austenistycznej (ADJ) oraz żeliwa wermikularnego. W zakończeniu referatu zwrócono również uwagę na tendencje stosowania na ww. odlewy odpowiednich gatunków żeliwa ciągliwego.

The performance conditions of automotive castings made from various grades of cast iron were characterized. The importance of proper selection of the cast iron grade for parts of a given type basing on the principal mechanical properties was emphasized. The relevant properties of the cast iron grades used most frequently were given. The world trends in application of the highduty cast iron, grey alloyed cast iron, spheroidal graphite cast iron of, among others, baini-austenitic structure (ADI) and of cast iron with vermicular grahite were outlined. Finally some tendencies to use for these castings aroriate grades of the malleable cast iron were also metioned.
