W artykule omówiono rolę i zadania Instytutu Odlewnictwa na tle oceny rozwoju odlewnictwa w świecie i w Polsce oraz przedstawiono ilustracje obrazujące ilościowe zmiany w odlewnictwie zarówno w świecie, jak i w Polsce. Określono główne cele działalności Instytutu ujęte w misji firmy i strategię działania Instytutu oraz sposoby finansowania działalności badawczo-rozwojowej, które warunkują możliwości realizacji założonych celów. W miarę szczegółowo omówiono podstawowe obszary współpracy z przemysłem, ujęte w zrealizowanych i aktualnie realizowanych projektach celowych, finansowanych w części przez Komitet Badań Naukowych, podkreślając tę część finansowania jako znaczącą pomoc budżetu państwa dla rozwoju przemysłu. W dalszej części omówiono podjęte nowe obszary działalności Instytutu, które wynikają częściowo z przyjętych wzorów z Instytutów Odlewnictwa wybranych Państw Unii Europejskiej, podkreślając konieczność ściślejszej współpracy z przemys�em odlewniczym.

The role and tasks of the Foundry Research Institute were described and compared with the development of foundry industry in Poland and in the world. Some transformation currlently taking place in the foundry sector in Poland and in the world were mentioned and illustradet with appropriate figures. The target goals of the Institute activity expressed in Mission of the Firm were disclosed and the strategies and sources of financing the research and development works, on which a successful accomplishment of the pre-estabilished strategic goals depends, were discussed. The main spheres of the cooperation with industry, adopted for realization in the target projects already completed and those still in execution, financed in part from the funds of the Committee of Scientific Research, were described in detail, with emphasis put on the fact that this source of finance is an important contribution of the state budget to a development of the domestic foundry industry sector. In further part of the study some possibilities of the new activities of the Institute emerging in connection with models adopted for practical application from the institutes of foundry practice operating in some selected states of the European Union were disclosed, emphasizing the necessity of estabilishing a close cooperation with foundry industry sector.
