Issues presented in this work relate to geotechnical problems that are specific to the mining areas. The paper discusses the methodology of mathematical and numerical modeling of these problems. Examples contained in the paper include: predicting the influence of mining exploitation on a detached building and evaluating the effectiveness of the building protection with the trench. Possible applications of numerical modeling as a tool to aid the continuous monitoring of the building state during the exploitation have also been discussed.

The paper presents a part of the test research aimed at determining effectiveness of building protection under the conditions of biological corrosion. The tests have been carried out for corroding samples of the material collected from real building objects before and after the use of various measures aimed at combating the reasons of the biological corrosion. The light emission (i.e. bioluminescence) accompanying vital functions of unwanted organisms (e.g. fungi) has been used as a measure of effectiveness of the treatment. The light intensity has been read out from the images registered by CCD camera operating in the technology of single photon counting. So obtained results indicate that bioluminescence imaging may be used for quick qualitative evaluation of the protection.

Kryteria ochrony budowli przy eksploatacji górniczej pokładów w warunkach małego nachylenia określił Witold Budryk. Podzielił on obiekty na pięć kategorii ochrony, przyjmując dopuszczalne wartości wskaźników odkształcenia. Owe kategorie ochrony przyjęto za podstawę klasyfikacji obiektów na terenach górniczych.

Przedstawiono zarys, prowadzonej w kraju przez ostatnie kilkadziesiąt lat, działalności naukowo-badawczej i edukacyjnej w dziedzinie trwałości i ochrony budowli przed korozją. Zaprezentowano rolę pozainstytucjonalnych stowarzyszeń grupujących specjalistów o znaczących dokonaniach, a następnie krótko omówiono osiągnięcia najbardziej prężnych ośrodków naukowo-badawczych. Wymieniając dorobek tych instytucji wyszczególniono nazwiska twórców, którzy istotnie przyczynili się do osiągnięcia sukcesów na polu walki z korozją w budownictwie.

An overview has been provided of the activity in the fi elds of research and education that has been made over the course of the past several dozen years in Poland in regard to the durability and corrosion protection of buildings and structures. The role of non institutional organizations which group specialists with signifi cant achievements has been presented, and a brief overview of the most resilient R&D centers has been provided. In listing the achievements of these institutions, the names of the inventors who have contributed mostly to the success in fi ghting corrosion in the building industry have been given.

The paper deals with the analysis of chosen new materials properties intended to increase dynamie resistance and integrity of structures. The key experimental results are presented which represent the achievements obtained on national and international levels in Bratislava, Iasi, Skopje, Seriate and Ispra. Related analytical studies done so far in Bucharest, Opole, Skopje and Bratislava created the basis for more smart calculations approach when the design resistance is being to assess. Displacement - force dependence through seismic response spectra were applied for simple masonry structure and R/C frame with reinforced masonry infills. The procedure follows in details the stress-deflection stage when higher dynamic seismic or other actions appear. The recoramended behaviour limits are analysed in relation to the ductility and resistance capacity of the respective structural system. The applied option suggests the verification of expected ultimate stresses and deformation. Thus, the performance analysis gives the indices whether the structure is provided with sufficient dynamie resistance capacily against the damage.
