Paper presents power electronic drives with new topologies. Progress in medium voltage power electronic devices results in development of the converters with intermediate DC link current. Application of controlled converter, on the supply side, (instead of diode rectifier) provides reduction of harmonics of the current delivered to drive. Moreover phase of the current is also under full control. Therefore reactive power consumption is also controlled independently to the load. The drive equipped with current controlled input rectifier may be supplied from source representing low short circuit current. Topology of the supply the new drive from grid and from stand-by low power generation unit is described. After successful developing 800 kW/6kV pump drive a 4 MW/6kV drive system was designed. The new drive is dedicated to replace conventional hydraulic coupling systems.

Resulting from norms, disposals and other norms are used, but also from the need of rationalization of managing the electric energy in supply electrical receivers used in propulsion schemes (mainly big power -above lOOkW) power electronics converters. This paper presents methods of selecting input circuits of frequency converters and its influence on level of electrical energy losses. Selecting of installations backed-up with calculations very often leads to solutions in which the same effect of applying the working machine's speed regulator allows to gain fewer power losses and smaller affect on the energy source. Some of the results of tasted high power driving systems have been also described.
