Początki zastosowania metalu w budownictwie podziemnym sięgają końca XVII i początków XIX wieku. Na ten fakt złożyło się szereg czynników, z których najważniejsze to rozwój metalurgii żelaza, hutnictwa, ale równie ważnym jest zaawansowanie techniczne konstruktorów obudów. Ważnym jest również fakt prowadzenia eksploatacji przez górników na coraz to większych głębokościach, a co się z tym bezpośrednio wiąże wzrost obciążenia ze strony górotworu na konstrukcje obudowy. Stal, a dokładniej obudowy wykonane z stali wyparły dotychczas powszechnie używane obudowy drewniane i kamienne. Rozwój konstrukcji obudów metalowych podzielono na dwa okresy, pierwszy do końca lat 30. XX wieku.

The origins of the application of metal in the underground construction date back to the late seventeenth and early nineteenth century. Number of factors contributed to this fact, the most important of which consisted in the development of ferrous metallurgy and steel industry, but equally important was the technical advancement of design engineers. The fact of conducting exploitation by the miners at ever greater depths is also important, and what is directly connected consequence an increased load on the part of the strata on the structure of the support. Steel and more specifically, supports made of steel pushed out wood and stone supports widely used up till then. Development of design of metal supports was divided into two periods, the first one lasting till the end of the 30s of the Twentieth century.

Już lata 20. XX wieku charakteryzowały się bardzo intensywnymi pracami nad wdrożeniem w górnictwie podziemnym nowych konstrukcji obudów metalowych. W tej części artykułu opisano: profile stalowe stosowane do konstrukcji elementów obudów górniczych wyrobisk korytarzowych; konstrukcje strzemion do połączeń elementów obudów górniczych; podział konstrukcji strzemion do metalowych obudów chodnikowych; rozwiązania konstrukcyjne odrzwi obudów chodnikowych; przyszłość chodnikowych obudów metalowych w górnictwie.

Already the 20th of XX century were characterized by very intensive works on the implementation in the underground mining of new structures of metal supports. This section of the paper describes: steel profiles used for the construction of elements of mining supports of roadways; structures of shackles for connecting of elements of mining supports; division of shackles for metal supports of roadways; structure design solutions of frames of roadway's supports; the future of metal supports in the mining industry.
