The paper compares the sets of theoretical and experimental investigations concerning strain concentrations in machine elements. It also defines an independent influence of that concentration on the durability of these elements being in the state of irregularity of their inside strain. Next, the paper deals with the methods in increasing the durability of machine elements which may be weakened by concentration.

Slender ring-stiffened cylindrical shells do not behave like beams even though their geometry is beam-like. The reason for this behaviour is non-uniform wind pressure along the circumference and the circular shell section. This paper presents the results of the analysis of the behaviour of steel chimneys under quasistatic wind load. Numerical model created using FEM package ADINA was used in the analysis and results were compared to obtained from beam model. Differences in meridional stresses are especially essential in chimney base lever for chimney of slenderness lower than 25 and they disappeared at flange connection levers.
