Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to presents a study of the energy absorption of square tubular structures. Design/methodology/approach: Tubes of three materials namely, mild steel, glass reinforced composite and Kevlar reinforced composite were used to observe their deformation and energy absorption characteristics. The tubular structures energy absorption characteristic was reviewed from both the materials and structural points of view. Axial crushing tests were carried out on the tubes under quasi-static loading condition. Findings: The load-displacement curves of the tested tubes were presented and described. In addition, the deformation processes of the tubes was analyzed and evaluated. Several fracture modes of the crushed tubes were observed in most cases. Research limitations/implications: It has been found that parameters such as thickness, type of fiber and length of tubes has a considerable effect on the crushing characteristic of collapsed tubes. Originality/value: Description of crushing behavior of the energy absorption characteristic of glass/polyester and Kevlar/polyester thin-walled composite square tubes under quasi-static axial crushing load.

W pracy porównano trwałość obliczeniową próbek ze stali 10HNAP i 18G2A, poddanych cyklicznym obciążeniom zginającym i skręcającym z różnymi wartościami obciążenia średniego, z trwałością uzyskaną eksperymentalnie. Zastosowano metodę transformacji amplitud naprężenia cykli obciążenia niesymetrycznego na równoważne im pod względem zmęczenia cykle obciążenia symetrycznego o powiększonej amplitudzie i zerowej wartości średniej. Zastosowano powszechnie znane modele transformacji amplitud oraz zaproponowano nowy model uwzględniający zmianę współczynnika asymetrii cyklu wraz z liczbą cykli do zniszczenia. Wyniki analiz zawarte w pracy wskazują na dobrą zgodność trwałości obliczonej według zaproponowanego algorytmu z trwałością uzyskaną eksperymentalnie.

In the paper the calculated fatigue life for specimens made of 10HNAP and 18G2A steels subjected to cyclic bending and torsion with participation of the stress mean value is compared with the experimental fatigue life. The method of transformation of amplitudes of cycles with non-zero mean value for equivalent cycles with higher amplitudes and the zero mean value was applied. The well-known transformation relationships and a new model witch use of the function of change of the coefficient of the material sensitivity to cycle asymmetry depending on the fatigue life were applied. It has been shown that fatigue life obtained from proposed algorithm gives good correlation between calculating and experimental fatigue lifes.
