This work investigates the effect of the notch on fatigue behavior by combining two methods: the extended finite element method (XFEM) and the averaged strain energy density (ASED) method, which considers the combined action of bending and shear loading. The ASED method has already been proven accurate for assessing the failure of components in the presence of sharp and blunt notches, and several results are available in the literature for different materials. These results were compared with those obtained from the experimental tests reported here. The main purpose of this study was twofold: The first part is an experimental study of fatigue in rotary bending of specimens weakened by U and V notches made of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) material. Two values for the radius were used for the U-notches (0.2 and 2 mm) and two angles for the V-notches (20° and 140°). The second part of the study consisted of performing several simulation tests using the Cast3m software for different angles and radii. The local approach based on the mean value of the ASED acted over a finite-sized volume surrounding the highly stressed regions. The maximum principal stress located at the notch edge defined the center of the control volume. If the notch is blunt, the control volume assumes a crescent shape with its width measured along the notch bisector line. When the notch is considered pointed (V-notched) or is a crack, the control volume becomes a circle with its center at the notch tip. The presence of geometric discontinuities in structures affects their lifetime by reducing it, producing a high concentration of local energy around the notch tip. Good convergence was obtained between the numerical simulation and experimental results for the ASED in a finished zone surrounding the notch tip.

This paper presents how machine learning techniques may be applied in the process of designing a compact dual-band H-shaped rectangular microstrip antenna (RMSA) operating in 0.75–2.20 GHz and 3.0–3.44 GHz frequency ranges. In the design process, the same dimensions of upper and lower notches are incorporated, with the centered position right in the middle. Notch length and width are verified for investigating the antenna. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed from the simulated dataset, and is used for shape prediction. The same dataset is used to create a mathematical model as well. The predicted outcome is compared and it is determined that the model relying on ANN offers better results.

The article presents an analysis of the change in air voids in asphalt mixtures subjected to fatigue tests at three temperatures of 0°C, 10°C and 25°C. The X-ray computerized tomography imaging method, XCT, was used to identify the air voids in the samples. The research allowed to determine changes in the content of air voids in subsequent fatigue cycles in the sample area. The relationship between air voids volume and the stiffness modulus value was also determined during fatigue for three temperatures. The largest changes were found in samples with notches at 0°C. The analysis of the change in the content of air voids showed that the micro-cracking nucleation processes develop with the number of fatigue cycles. Using the numerical model finite element method we determined the distribution and change in fatigue damage in the extreme areas of the sample during various stages of fatigue. We found clear relationship between the damage and the increased content of air voids.

Części 1÷9 i 1÷10 Eurokodu 3 oraz PN-EN ISO 5817:2014 uporządkowały reguły projektowania konstrukcji stalowych narażonych na zmęczenie. Podane klasy zmęczeniowe FAT określono wg jednakowego algorytmu dla badanych elementów poziomu jakości B i C. W artykule wykazano, że algorytmu tego nie można stosować dla elementów starzonych oraz z niezgodnościami spawalniczymi, karbami poziomu jakości D i większymi. Wymagania dotyczące zmęczenia z części 1÷9 Eurokodu 3, podobnie jak udarności z części 1÷10, nie powinny dotyczyć konstrukcji eksploatowanych.

Parts 1÷9 and 1÷10 of the Eurocode 3 and the PN-EN ISO 5817:2014 standard ordered the rules for designing steel structures exposed to fatigue. The given FAT fatigue classes were determined according to the same algorithm for the tested quality level elements B and C. The article shows that this algorithm can not be used for aging elements and with welding incompatibilities, notches of quality level D and larger. Fatigue requirements from parts 1÷9 of Eurocode 3, as well as impact strengths from parts 1÷10, should not apply to exploited structures.

Like other means of transport, merchant ships face the problem of increasing requirements concerning the environment protection, which, among other issues, implies the reduction of fuel consumption by the ship. Here, the conventional approach which consists in making use of higher strength steels to decrease the mass of the ship hull can be complemented by the use of new steel structures of sandwich panel type. However, the lack of knowledge and experience concerning, among other issues, fatigue strength assessment of thin-walled sandwich structures makes their use limited. Untypical welds imply the need for individual approach to the fatigue analysis. The article presents the effect of numerical FEM modelling with the aid of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) elements on the results of strain and stress distributions in the areas of toe and root notches of the analysed laser weld. The presented results of computer simulation reveal that modelling of strain and stress states in 2D (instead of full 3D) affects only the results in close vicinity of the notch, and the observed differences rapidly disappear at a distance of 0.05 mm from the bottom of the notch. The obtained results confirm the possibility of use of numerically effective 2D strain and stress state models for analysing the fatigue strength of laser weld according to local approach.

The paper reports behaviour of engineering materials for different kinds of notches, i.e. having U, V shapes. Their variants with respect to dimensions are illustrated in static and fatigue tests. The influence of these types of geometrical imperfections on material fatigue is presented using variations of the Wöhler curve, number of cycles to failure and the fatigue notch factor. Results of experiments conducted by the use of the Digital Image Correlation system called 4M Aramis are illustrated. Courses of tensile characteristics of the 41Cr4 steel, obtained by means of both techniques: extensometer and DIC are compared. They indicated that the DIC technique can be a good tool for determination of mechanical properties. The equivalent strain full-field distributions on specimens tensioned with and without imperfections up to material fracture are presented. The influence of U and V notches on variations of tensile curves is shown.

Analizę wytrzymałościową przeprowadzono dla dwóch sposobów obciążenia modelu, w którym znajduje się karb geometryczny. Przyjęto, że element pracuje w warunkach zmiennych obciążeń mechanicznych i cieplnych. Założono, że charakter tych obciążeń jest zbliżony do warunków jakie panują podczas włączania i wyłączania bloku energetycznego. Na przebieg zmian obciążeń w czasie składa się przedział czasu obejmujący nagrzewanie i wzrost ciśnienia, okres w którym ciśnienie i temperatura przyjmują stałe wartości oraz przedział czasu obejmujący odciążenie i spadek wartości temperatury. Badano przypadek, gdy karb znajduje się na powierzchni materiału. Opisano przebieg zmian odkształcenia i naprężenia w wierzchołku karbu w warunkach opisanych obciążeń mechanicznych i zmiennej temperatury.

A strength analysis was performed for two methods of loading of a model with a geometric notch. It was assumed that the element works under variable mechanical and thermal loads, and athat the nature of the loads is similar to the conditions existing during the start-up and shut-down of a power unit. The course of changes in the load over time consists of a time interval including the heating and pressure rise, the period when the pressure and temperature assume constant values, and the time period encompassing the unloading and the drop in the temperature. A case was investigated where the notch was located on the surface of the material. The course of changes is described concerning the strain and stress in the apex of the notch in the discussed mechanical conditions and at a variable temperature.

In this paper the experimental results of fatigue analysis of the compressor blade were presented. Temperature distribution as a method of measuring crack length was considered. The blade with the V-notch (which simulates the foreign object damage) was entered into transverse vibration under resonance condition. During investigations both the amplitude of the blade tip displacement and also the crack length were monitored. At the same the pictures of time temperature distribution were taken. In the first part of the work the amplitude-frequency diagrams were obtained for different sizes of cracks. In the investigation, both a number of load cycles to crack initiation and dynamics of the crack growth in the compressor blade subjected to vibrations were determined. An additional original result of the work is the comparison of optically measured crack length and the dimension of the crack length taken from the picture. An important application will be the benefits of the method of measuring the length of the slot with a temperature distribution image. The results presented in this paper have theoretical and practical significance.

W niniejszej pracy przeprowadzono eksperymentalną analizę zmęczeniową łopatki sprężarki lotniczego silnika turbinowego. Rozkład temperatur na łopatce wykorzystano do określenia długości powstałej w trakcie badań szczeliny zmęczeniowej. Łopatka z karbem symulującym uszkodzenie obcym obiektem została poddana drganiom poprzecznym wstanie rezonansu. Podczas badań zarówno amplituda przemieszczenia wierzchołka ostrza, a także długość pęknięcia były monitorowane. W tym samym czasie wykonano kamerą termowizyjną zdjęcia rozkład temperatury. W pierwszej fazie pracy wykresy amplitudowo-częstotliwościowe uzyskano dla różnej wielkości pęknięć. Określono liczbę cykli obciążeń do inicjacji pęknięć, a także dynamikę wzrostu pęknięć w łopatce sprężarki narażonej na drgania. Dodatkowym efektem pracy jest porównanie długości szczelin zmierzonych bezpośrednio na badanej łopatce jak i na obrazie z rozkładami temperatury wokół pęknięcia. Przedstawiono zalety metody pomiaru długości szczeliny z wykorzystaniem zdjęć z kamery termowizyjnej. Wyniki przedstawione w niniejszym artykule mają wartość teoretyczną i praktyczną.

In this work, the influence of the crack propagation velocity on heat release in blade was shown. Research was be performed during fatigue test of the compressor blade. In the investigations, the blade with the V-notch was examined. The blades during experiment were entered into transverse vibration by a vibration system Unholtz-Dickie UDCO-TA-250. The crack propagation process was conducted in resonance condition. The blades were periodically bended what simulates geometry changes during operation of the engine. The main part of the work is based on research of fatigue. During investigations both the amplitude of the crack length and also the blade tip displacement were controlled. Additional velocity of crack propagation was measured by change of a crack length in time. In the same time temperature, distribution pictures were observed. The taken picture was used to exhibit the phenomenon and shown the heat propagation direction. The main results of presented investigation are both the parameters of a crack and the crack growth dynamics in the compressor blade subjected to vibrations. An additional original result of the work is connection between velocity of crack propagation and temperature distribution taken from picture. The result of above analysis can be used in determining the amount of energy released during the cracking process and evaluate the amount of energy required for the growth of a gap. In this work, the capabilities of the proposed method and the problems associated with it were defined. The results presented in this paper have theoretical and practical value.

The work presents a methodology of determination of fracture process zone by use of effective length. In this work, the results of experimental tests of 40 HM-T steel were used. Tests were done for smooth and notched specimens with a radius of 0.5 mm and 1 mm. In the calculation, multi-linear hardening model and cyclic material properties were applied. Research indicated that the effective length depends on the notch geometry and loading level.

Praca zawiera wyniki badań rozwoju pęknięć zmęczeniowych w próbkach z karbem wykonanych z dwóch stopów tytanu o zróżnicowanej mikrostrukturze. Do badań wybrano stop Ti-6Al-4V (IMI 318) jako typowy stop dwufazowy α + β oraz stop Ti-2,5Cu (IMI 230) zaliczany do stopów o mikrostrukturze α, zawierający fazę międzymetaliczną Ti2Cu. Przedstawiono wyniki badań mikrostruktury oraz propagacji pęknięć zmęczeniowych w próbkach płaskich z zewnętrznym karbem jednostronnym poddanych zginaniu. Obserwowano wpływ mikrostruktury na ścieżki pękania.

The paper presents the results of research on the development of fatigue crack in notched samples of two titanium alloys with diversified microstructure. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been chosen for the research as representative for the two phased alloy α + β as well as Ti-2,5Cu alloy containing intermetallic phase Ti2Cu and rated among alloys with α microstructure. The results of microstructure research and propagation of fatigue crack in flat samples with external, notch one-sided being exposed to bending have been presented. The microstructure influence on the ways of cracking has been observed.

Praca zawiera wyniki badań rozwoju pęknięć zmęczeniowych w dwóch stopach aluminium o podobnej mikrostrukturze. Próbki miały karb zewnętrzny, jednostronny o głębokości 2 mm, z promieniem zaokrąglenia dna karbu ρ = 0,2 mm (rys. 2). Do badań wybrano stopy PA6 (EN AW-2017A) i PA7 (EN AW- 2024) zaliczane do stopów o mikrostrukturze α, zawierające fazę międzymetaliczną Al2Cu. Badania doświadczalne rozwoju pęknięć zmęczeniowych prowadzono przy cyklicznym zginaniu na maszynie zmęczeniowej MZGS-100. Próbki jednostronnie utwierdzone poddawano zginaniu przy stałej amplitudzie momentu zginającego Ma = 7,92 N·m, co odpowiadało nominalnej amplitudzie naprężenia normalnego σa = 92,8 MPa. Badania zmęczeniowe wykonano w zakresie wysokiej liczby cykli przy współczynniku asymetrii cyklu R = –1 i częstotliwości obciążenia 28,4 Hz. Przyrosty długości pęknięć mierzono za pomocą mikrometru umieszczonego na mikroskopie przy powiększeniu 25 razy i dokładności 0,01 mm. W tym samym czasie rejestrowano liczbę cykli obciążenia. Wyniki badań zmęczeniowych przy cyklicznym zginaniu przedstawiono na wykresach długości pęknięć a w funkcji liczby cykli N (rys. 5) oraz prędkości wzrostu pęknięć zmęczeniowych da/dN w funkcji zakresu zmian współczynnika intensywności naprężenia ΔK (rys. 6). Pękanie próbek ze stopów aluminium o mikrostrukturze fazy α zachodzi w płaszczyźnie poślizgu przy naprężeniu stycznym prawie niezależnym od orientacji przestrzennej ziarna. Różne powiększenia pęknięć dobrano tak, aby przedstawić drogę głównego pęknięcia około 0,7 mm (rys. 3a, 4a). Rysunki 3b i 4b przedstawiają końcowe długości pęknięć, około 250 μm, powiększone fragmenty rysunków 3a i 4a w celu analizy rozwoju tych pęknięć. Obserwowano wpływ mikrostruktury na ścieżki pękania w próbkach. Na przełomach obserwowano transkrystaliczne pęknięcia przez ziarna fazy α.

The paper contains the research results on the fatigue crack growth in two aluminium alloys with similar microstructure. The specimens had an external, unilateral notch 2 mm deep with a root radius ρ = 0.2 mm (Fig. 2). The chosen PA6 (EN AW-2017A) and PA7 (EN AW-2024) alloys belongs to the α-type alloys and contain the Al2Cu phase. The tests of the fatigue crack growth were performed under cyclic bending at the MZGS-100 fatigue test stand. Unilaterally restrained specimens were subjected to cyclic bending at the constant amplitude moment Ma = 7.92 N·m which correspond to the nominal amplitude of normal stress σa = 92.8 MPa. The fatigue tests were carried out in the high cycle fatigue for the stress ratio R = –1 and the loading frequency 28.4 Hz. The fatigue crack increments were measured with a micrometer located in the portable microscope with magnification of 25 times and accuracy 0.01 mm. At the same time, a number of loading cycles N was registered. The test results under cyclic bending were shown as graphs of the crack length a versus the number of cycles N (Fig. 5) and fatigue crack growth rate da/dN versus changes of stress intensinty factor range ΔK (Fig. 6). Cracks of the specimens made of aluminium alloys of phase α microstructure occur on the slip plane under the shear stress independent on spatial orientation of the grain. Different magnifications were selected in such a way that they present a path of the main crack, about 0.7 mm in length (Figs. 3a, 4a). Figures 3b, 4b present the final cracks course, about 250 μm in length, cut off from Figures 3a, 4a and magnified in order to analyse the cracks development. The effect of the microstructure on the crack paths in specimens was observed. Transcrystalline cracks through grains of the α phase have been usually observed on the fractures.

In the present study, we have developed a code using Matlab software for solving a rectangular aluminum plate having void, notch, at different boundary conditions discretizing a two dimensional (2D) heat conduction equation by the finite difference technique. We have solved a 2D mixed boundary heat conduction problem analytically using Fourier integrals (Deb Nath et al., 2006; 2007; 2007; Deb Nath and Ahmed, 2008; Deb Nath, 2008; Deb Nath and Afsar, 2009; Deb Nath and Ahmed, 2009; 2009; Deb Nath et al., 2010; Deb Nath, 2013) and the same problem is also solved using the present code developed by the finite difference technique (Ahmed et al., 2005; Deb Nath, 2002; Deb Nath et al., 2008; Ahmed and Deb Nath, 2009; Deb Nath et al., 2011; Mohiuddin et al., 2012). To verify the soundness of the present heat conduction code results using the finite difference method, the distribution of temperature at some sections of a 2D heated plate obtained by the analytical method is compared with those of the plate obtained by the present finite difference method. Interpolation technique is used as an example when the boundary of the plate does not pass through the discretized grid points of the plate. Sometimes hot and cold fluids are passed through rectangular channels in industries and many types of technical equipment. The distribution of temperature of plates including notches, slots with different temperature boundary conditions are studied. Transient heat transfer in several pure metallic plates is also studied to find out the required time to reach equilibrium temperature. So, this study will help find design parameters of such structures.

The aim of the study was to determine the configuration of pathologic audiograms in patients with excessive noise exposure, and to calculate the frequency of notches in the audiogram in patients with and without excessive noise exposure by avoiding the effect of age-related hearing loss. We have analyzed 514 audiograms of 257 patients aged between 20 to 50 years: 240 patients (mean age of 38.7 years) with excessive noise exposure and 17 patients (mean age of 41.2 years) with notches in the audiogram, but without a history of excessive noise exposure. For statistical data analysis we have used the Chisquare test and Fisher exact test with the level of significance p < 0.05. Pathologic audiograms were classified into five different types: Slope at 4000 Hz (0.8%), Slope at 2000 Hz (15.1%), Notch at 4000 Hz (67.4%), Notch at 2000 Hz (0.8%), Flat (8.9%), and 7% were out of this classification. A total of 190 (79.2%) patients with excessive noise exposure had a notch in the audiogram. Left ear notches were the most common. Among the patients with notched audiograms, 91.8% had a history of excessive noise exposure, either occupational or nonoccupational, and 8.2% did not report any excessive noise exposure.

The paper contains comparing calculations of the stress fields in an elastic plate with notch along the arc of a circle, ellipse or parabola obtained by analytic method based on complex Kolosov-Muskhelishvili potentials and by numerical variation-difference method. These fields differ by no more than 2%, which, in particular, indicates the reliability of such numerical implementation. This discrepancy can be explained by the fact that in the analytical solution domain is unbounded, while the numerical calculation was carried out, obviously, for a finite field. The given stresses at the top of the notch along the arc of an ellipse or a parabola significantly increase with increasing of the relative depth of the notch (while increasing its depth or decreasing width).

This paper presents a nonlocal method for fatigue life prediction of notched elements in which area approach is used. In proposed model, a elasto-plastic Finite Element Analysis is performed, and averaging of energy parameter with a weight function has been applied. Calculations were performed based on a data obtained for smooth and notched specimens subjected to cyclic tension-compression loading.

The phenomenon of the guided waves propagation can be applied in order to detect different types of damages in real structures. The existence of flaws, like cracks, notches, or holes, causes the change of the wave propagation in the analysed structure in comparison with the intact one. However, in the vicinity of the free edges the dynamic response is very complicated due to the reflections and interference of the incident waves. Thus, the process of the damage detection and localization can be very difficult. Therefore, the current work is devoted to the experimental and numerical analysis of the guided waves propagation in the narrow, thin plates (beams). The investigated structure is made of aluminum alloy. Mainly, the influence of the notch on the waves’ propagation is studied. The waves are generated and picked up by the piezoelectric transducers. In order to carry out the numerical simulations the finite element method is applied. Moreover, the piezoelectric activators and sensors are modelled with the use of the coupled field finite solid elements and the plate with the use of the structural solid elements. Generally, three types of the waves are observed, namely the horizontal and shear wave, which move along the symmetry axis of the plate and the horizontal wave, which propagates in the perpendicular direction. The existence of the notch generally causes that the voltage amplitude of the received signal is reduced in comparison with the results obtained for the intact structure. Qualitatively, the similar effect is observed in the case of the experimental findings.

This paper presents a brief review of literature about nonlocal method for fatigue life prediction in which volumetric approach is used and one model is proposed for elements which contain notch. In proposed model, a elasto-plastic Finite Element Method, cyclic properties of material and energy parameter were used. Calculations were performed based on a data obtained for smooth and notched specimens and satisfied correlations were noticed.
