This paper presents a new type of north finding sensor. The passive optical sensor captures images of the sky at a high frame rate and analyzes them into a polarized map of the sky with a high degree of accuracy. The sensor operates in real time, under various weather and atmospheric conditions. The sensor output shows high heading accuracy relative to the celestial true north. Based upon the NAS-14V2 astronomical method of navigation, it is possible to define the sensor global position on earth.

W artykule przedstawiono metody wyznaczania kierunku północnego oparte na pomiarach inercjalnych. Opisano ideę girokompasu - przyrządu, który zrewolucjonizował na początku XX w. pomiar kursu na statkach i okrętach. Przedstawiono procedurę girokompasowania stosowaną od połowy XX w. najpierw w układach kardanowych, a następnie w układach bezkardanowych orientacji przestrzennej. Pokazano modyfikacje tej metody pozwalające na zwiększenie dokładności pomiaru. Zaprezentowano rownież metodę inercjalną bezgiroskopową, która stanowi ciekawą propozycję rozwoju inercjalnych metod określenia kierunku północnego.

In the article north finding methods based on inertial measurements are presented. The idea of gyrocompass is described, as at the beginning of 20th century this instrument revolutionised procedures of course angle measurement on ships. The gyrocompassing procedure is presented - it was used during first half of 20th century, primarily in cardan and then in strapdown inertial attitude measuring systems. Modifications of this method, aimed at improving measurement accuracy, are discussed. The nongyroscopic inertial method is also considered, as an interesting proposition for the development of inertial north finding methods.
