The design standards provide only the ULS (ultimate limit states) and SLS (service-ability limit states) requirements, as well as construction requirements, whereas the deŹsign procedures are not given. The designers task is to form the structure so that each of its sections, as well as the whole structure, would fulfill the safety conditions, which are defined in the standards by proper boundary values. Practically, as its commonly known, we design a few "critical" sections (in a simply supported beam it is usually just one section) and then using certain rules and procedures try to program the prestress so that the whole structure meets the ULS and SLS requirements. In the paper the authors proŹpose a procedure of the design of a simply supported beam based on so called boundary envelopes, giving the way of their determination according to the criteria mentioned in EC. The described method must be complemented by additional verifications, which are highly difficult or even impossible to plan basing on the boundary envelopes method.
