In the paper a simple method for two-parameter evaluation of a technical system's reliability is presented. The method is based on review method. Two computational examples are included. High accordance of the results obtained with the new method and those obtained with other convectional methods proves that the proposed method could be used in practical applications.

Reliability of water supply to the user can be increased, e.g., by limiting excessive pressure in the water-pipe network, thus decreasing the rate of pipe failure, the volume of water loss in the pipeline and related operating costs. For the needs of the present study, use was made of the data sets (provided by the Waterworks of Wrocław) which had been collected during eight years of pipeline operation in two housing estates. The effect of pressure head on failure rate and repair cost was examined in terms of the following parameters: pipe material, pipe diameter, type of pipe damage, type of fittings damage, duration of service and year of pipeline construction. Data on the costs of pipeline and fillings repair covered the year 1999. The study has shown that the reduction of excessive pressure in the investigated pipeline brought about a noticeable decrease in the indices of damage and repair cost flow for the given water-pipe network Such indices may be of utility in budget planning, and also in finding the optimal decision with respect to the operation or retrofit of existing water-pipe lines.
