Adsorption abilities of industrial kaolin from Polish deposit have been examined. The adsorption isotherms for phenol, Methylene Blue and Ni(II) ions have been determined using the UV- and Vis-spectrophotometry as well as the AAS technique, respectively. Adsorption capacity of kaolin towards the organic pollutants has been found to be several times less than that of bentonite, which has been used as a reference adsorbent. On the other hand, kaolin has the double capacity for Ni(II) ions as compared to bentonite. Acid-treated kaolin again has increased the adsorption capacity for Ni(II) ions suggesting the active adsorption sites are cation vacancies.
