Nonlinear buckling analysis of network arch bridges

The paper presents designing due to the instability in-plane problem of the net-arch bridge. Firstly, three essential nonlinear examples are benchmarked in a finite element software. Secondly, linear and nonlinear buckling analyses are conducted, with the purpose of investigating the impact of nonlinear behavior of cables on steel arch instability, involving a comparison of the critical load factor and form from both the linear buckling and the post-critical third-order theory analyses. The impact of prestress and tension, elevation, and hanger failure on instability is discussed. Moreover, a new method for determining nonlinear buckling form for the net-arch structure is proposed in order to allow implementation of Unique Global and Local Imperfection method in cable structures. Calculations are conducted in the finite element software. The model of the network arch bridge is based on the bridge over Vistula River in Cracow.

Od pewnego czasu w Polsce budowane są obiekty typu network arch z zastosowaniem w konstrukcji łuków dwuteowników walcowanych. Uzyskane doświadczenia i ekonomiczna konstrukcja spowodowały, że rozwiązanie to przyjęło się i obecnie zaczyna przybierać na znaczeniu na tyle, że konieczne stało się podjęcie prac badawczych prowadzących do wyjaśnienia pewnych specyficznych kwestii charakterystycznych dla tego rodzaju konstrukcji, a zaobserwowanych przez projektantów podczas realizacji inwestycji.

Network arch bridges with the use of rolled I-beams in their arch structure have been constructed for some time in Poland. The experience gained with their construction and their cost-effective structure have allowed this solution to spread and its significance is increasing now, which results in the necessity to undertake research in order to clarify certain specific issues that characterize this type of structures and have been observed by designers during the execution of works.

W artykule przedstawiono projekt i budowę nowego mostu w centrum Żywca. W miejscu uszkodzonej konstrukcji starego, wieloprzęsłowego obiektu wybudowany został nowoczesny, jednoprzęsłowy most łukowy o siatkowym układzie wieszaków. Dzięki zrealizowanej inwestycji nie tylko powstał most o ciekawej architekturze, ale również znacząco uległ poprawie układ komunikacyjny w mieście.

The paper presents the main issues related to the design and construction of a new bridge in the center of the town of Żywiec in southern Poland. The single-span modern network arch bridge has been built in place of the old defective multi-span bridge. As a direct result of this investment not only has an interesting bridge been constructed but also the town’s transport network has been significantly improved.
