The Polish Carpathians are part of the great arc of mountains which stretches more than 1300 km from the Eastern Alps to the Balkan chain. The Inner Carpathians contact along the Tertiary strike-slip boundary with the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB), which is a strongly tectonized terrain separated from the Outer Carpathians by the Miocene sub-vertical strike-slip fault. The Outer Carpathians are built up of a stack of nappes and thrust-sheets completely uprooted from their basement and flatly overthrust onto the Miocene deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep. Neotectonic subsidences and uplifts are strongly differentiated within the various parts of Carpathians and their Foredeep.

A reconstruction of Neotectonic stress fields of the East European Craton (EEC) and the Variscan West European Platform WEP) with younger basement, performed for the first time, has demonstrated that platform basement age does not affect the orientation of regional stresses. The deformation of the northern and western parts of the EEC and the eastern part of the VWEP was possibly due to riftogenesis in the Arctics and Atlantic. Orogenic processes in the Carpathians caused deformation processes only in the narrow marginal parts adjacent surrounding platforms.

One of the main causes of geodynamic activity in Latvian territory is isostasy associated with deep tectonic processes. Isostatic equilibrium at the level of the Moho surface is considered. The correlation parameter of isostasy along the Deep Seismic Sounding Profile Sovetsk-Riga-Kohtla-Yarve has been analysed. A correlation has been found between isostasy and the horizontal gradient of gravity anomalies in Bouguer reduction and density of heat flow. A scheme of distribution of isostatic anomalies at the level of the Moho surface has been produced. The distribution of isostatic anomalies shows a conforming depth/geological structure. A comparison of isostatic anomalies with geophysical characteristics and geological structure at depth allows the definition of sites of possible active tectogenesis, directions and types of development of the Earth's crust. At the sites of some contact zones, negative and positive isostatic anomalies locate hypocentres of historical earthquakes and Recent seismic events. Data on the distribution of isostatic anomalies can be used to forecast future geodynamic hazards in Latvia and surrounding territories.
