Autor przedstawia pojęcie „potrzeby” jako istotną kategorię teoretyczną występującą w różnych dziedzinach nauki. Dotyczą one wszechstronnych aspektów życia ludzkiego w różnych jego wymiarach: jednostkowym i grupowym, wewnątrzspołecznym i międzynarodowym. Argumentuje, że na rzecz ich realizacji angażowane są instytucje, mobilizowana jest aktywność polityczna, sondowana opinia publiczna i prowadzone są badania naukowe. Nie jest zatem możliwe rozpatrywanie bezpieczeństwa bez odniesienia do kategorii potrzeb, tak jak nie istnieje ono bez związku z jego podmiotem. W artykule w systematyczny sposób przedstawia się istotę potrzeb i ich klasyfikację, analizując potrzebę bezpieczeństwa w życiu społecznym. Udowadnia, że bezpieczeństwo pozostaje jedną z podstawowych potrzeb człowieka i grup społecznych organizujących się w instytucje dla ich zaspokajania. Zwraca uwagę, że potrzeba bezpieczeństwa nieustannie motywuje do aktywności i podejmowania działań, których zakres znacząco zaczął już wykraczać we współczesnym świecie poza granice państw i ich względną samowystarczalność.

A need of security is a very important theoretical category appearing in the various fields of sciences. Author makes an argument that this category relates to wide-ranging aspects of human life in its various dimensions: individual, social, political and international. In conveyance of its understanding there are scientific researches involved of many institutions, mobilized political activity, and public opinion. It is argued that security can’t be analyzed without reference to a class of human needs, as it does not exist without relation to its subject. In this article, there is a systematic presentation made on nature of those needs and their classification, with emphasis on the need for security in social life. Author proves that security remains one of the basic human factors of any social groups organizing themselves in order to satisfy their needs. The need for security is constantly motivated by this type of activity and various actions corresponding to it. The scope of those extends in the modern world beyond the borders of countries and self-sufficiency.

From the very beginning human beings created their habitat in a way which would ensure maximum safety. The safety was supposed to come not just from the use of currently available building techniques but also from the individual features of living space being created, from the adaptation of place to individual needs of the inhabitants and from the harmony with the local culture, tradition and natural environment. The industrial revolution interrupted this natural process causing generation of vast areas of standardized buildings, populated by foreign, anonymous inhabitants. The twentieth century intensified this situation despite the efforts of the CIAM propagators to humanize life. Negative social phenomena such as lack of identity with a place of residence or lack of feeling of safety were faced especially after the Second World War when a big scale industrialized building program caused considerable uniformization of space. The analysis of the resident's attitude towards newly built residential areas gives basis for the statement that the acceptance of the space designs proposed by the architects depends mainly on relation between new buildings and the characteristics of the space where it is located. Generally accepted were buildings the design of which strongly distinguishes itself from the monotonous and dull background, or the buildings which although individual, but fit nicely in valuable and interesting for some reason surroundings. Accepted by the inhabitants, architectural forms characteristic of specific area or group of buildings, give rise to a feeling of liking and satisfaction coming from dwelling in particular space, giving origin to such concepts as "our street", "our suburb"A tendency to secure safety resulted in formation of two new, very interesting even though totally different as far as size and character arc concerned, types of multi-family residential buildings - condominiums and apartment buildings.
