The concept of visual navigation is based on comparing images from navigation sensors with the data stored in the system memory. A control and navigation system based on information from simplified image sensors was developed for smart missiles. The system was based on images acquired by infrared sensors distributed along the rotating line. The system was tested by simulations giving adequate results. In this paper an extension of the system for application to other vehicles is presented. The main advantages of the proposed system are the ruggedness, simplicity and low cost.

Istotą nawigacji porównawczej jest porównanie dynamicznie zarejestrowanego obrazu ze wzorcem i na tej podstawie wyznaczenie pozycji statku. W każdym z obrazów znajduje się duża ilość informacji nadmiarowej, która powinna być przed dalszą obróbką zredukowana. W artykule zaprezentowano trzy wybrane techniki kompresji obrazu wraz z oceną ich przydatności dla porównawczego wyznaczania pozycji.

The essence of comparative navigation is to match a dynamically registered image with the pattern and to plot the position on that basis. Radar images contain lots of redundant data which should be removed before any further processing. The paper presents three techniques and assesses their usefulness for comparative position plotting.

The article undertakes an issue of building an autonomous coastal positioning system that would work on the basis of information included in a radar image. Prior researches have led to working out the method of extracting characteristic points from the radar image - peninsulas, buoys etc. Currently the algorithm of identification of such points, that is assigning an identity (a position) to each of them, will be illustrated. The proposed solution is based on comparison of a relative bearing and distances fixed for pattern points (from a chart) and for points extracted from the radar image.

The article presents the application of the feedforward neural network with Hebba selforganization to radar images compression. Influence of number of neurons and size of segments of a radar image to its compressed form is checked.

The article describes one of the radar image compression methods - the "invariant" method. Furthermore, evaluation of the "invariant" method in the context of its application in the designed maritime coastal positioning system is presented. Influence of the "threshold", the median filter and FFT transform to a final form of compressed image is also considered.

The article presents the one element of the autonomous maritime positioning system which task is the identification of characteristic points generated from the radar image. The system to fix position in automatic way requires extraction of characteristic points, their identification and subsequently in the last calculation step an application of classical methods of the radar navigation. The present article illustrates the characteristic point's identification algorithm based on the invariant representation of the radar image.

Istotą nawigacji porównawczej jest porównanie dynamicznie zarejestrowanego obrazu ze wzorcem i na tej podstawie wyznaczenie pozycji statku. W artykule wykorzystano rzeczywiste obrazy radarowe z przejścia statku torem po Zalewie Szczecińskim. Przebadano odpowiedzi różnych rodzajów sztucznych sieci neuronowych wraz z analizą błędów.

The problem of continuous position availability is one of the most important issues connected with human activity on the sea. Because the availability of the electronic navigational systems can be limited in some cases (for example military operations) we should considered additional methods of gathering information about ship's position. In this paper one of these methods is presented, which is based on extraction specific features from radar images - characteristic points of the coast line.

The article presents how to assess different compression algorithms in the context of using them according to radar images and approximation position methods. Furthermore, an assessment of two images compression methods was shown - Fast Fourier Transform method and projection method.

Artykuł zawiera opis przystosowania obrazu radarowego i mapy elektronicznej do wyznaczania pozycji metodą komputerowego porównania obrazów. Przedstawiona została koncepcja modelu automatycznego wyznaczania pozycji z wykorzystaniem sztucznych sieci neuronowych.

The paper contains a description of radar image and electronic map adoption for determination of vessel position by the computer method for an image comparison. The model concept is presented for automatic determination of the position by using the artificial neuron nets.
