Navigational charts are a basic source of information for seafarers. But how accurate and reliable are they? How much trust and confidence can be put in them? Unfortunately, the answer is not so simple; it is far more complicated than merely saying that one chart is accurate and reliable while another is not. However, any seafarer navigating in unfamiliar waters should have the necessary skills. It is a great challenge – some may say an impossibility – to keep the thousands of navigational charts up to date. But exactly how out of date, how inaccurate, are the chart data? Chart users will have a better idea now that the Hydrographic Office is gradually implementing a new chart feature called the Zone of Confidence (ZOC) box which replaces the Source Diagram that is currently in use on large-scale charts. Source Diagrams, and now the improved ZOCs, assist seafarers in assessing hydrographic survey data and the associated levels of risk of navigating in a particular area. According to the new edition of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) specifications, S-4 navigational charts will provide more information on ZOCs. The current paper discusses these new regulations.

This paper presents history of navigational charts of Gulf of Gdańsk issued by Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy BHMW between 1927 and 2009. It also contains changes of graphic symbols and chart characteristics issued by BHMW for the Gulf of Gdańsk.

W prezentowanym artykule przedstawiono analizę porównawczą mapy standardowej z mapą elektroniczną. Uzyskano ją na zasadzie wyboru charakterystycznych elementów, które składają się na mapę oraz opisania ich w odpowiednim rozdziale. Każdy rozdział składa się z opisu danego elementu oddzielnie w mapie standardowej i elektronicznej, a następnie ukazuje różnice występujące pomiędzy tymi elementami w obu rodzajach map. Celem artykułu jest rozwiązanie ważnego problemu współczesnej nawigacji, jakim jest ukazanie różnic pomiędzy tymi mapami, oraz zaprezentowanie zalet, jakimi dysponuje mapa elektroniczna.

In the presented article there is declared a comparing analysis between standard and electronic charts. It was obtained by choosing characteristic points, which consist to the whole map and describing them in appropriate allocations. Every part consist of description of exact element separately for standard chart and electronic chart. Then there are showed differences between elements in both kinds of chart. The object of the article is to solve the certain problem of the modern navigation, to present the differences between those charts and to recommend the electronic chart.
