Sediments constitute one of the wastes that are generated in sewage treatment plants. The methods of their final management depend on the sewage sludge system management. One of the employed methods is Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD). The article presents the process of autothermal oxygen digestion of sewage sludge as a method enabling to obtain biomass, which can be used in the natural environment. In addition to the description of the theoretical basis of the discussed process, the quality of the formed sewage sludge is presented. The amount of sludge and the manner of its final utilisation were also analyzed. The results were presented on the basis of waste records kept in each of the analyzed sewage treatment plants. Sludge transfer cards in 2013-2018 were also analyzed in the sewage treatment plants where sludge undergoes the ATAD process.

Zagospodarowanie osadów ściekowych jest jednym z najważniejszych problemów krajowej gospodarki odpadami. Przyrodnicze wykorzystanie osadów ściekowych w Polsce (obok składowania) jest obecnie najprostszą i najtańszą metodą ich ostatecznego unieszkodliwiania. W artykule przedstawiono ogólne zasady gospodarowania osadami ściekowymi i możliwości ich praktycznego zastosowania na przykładzie oczyszczalni o RLM 2600.

Development of sewage sludge is one of the most important problems of the national waste management. Natural use of sewage sludge in Poland (next to the landfill) is currently the simplest and cheapest way to their final disposal. The article presents the general principles of sludge development and the possibility of practical application it on the example of waste water treatment plant on PE = 2600.

Przedstawiono dane statystyczne dotyczące ilości wytworzonych osadów ściekowych oraz sposobów ich wykorzystania. W oparciu o Krajowy Program Oczyszczania Ścieków Komunalnych oraz krajowy plan gospodarki odpadami zaprezentowano również prognozy dotyczące wytwarzania osadów ściekowych. Omówiono ograniczenia w zakresie składowania i przyrodniczego wykorzystania osadów ściekowych. Wskazano termiczne przekształcanie osadów ściekowych w obiektach nowo powstałych bądź istniejących (np. cementowniach) jako dominującą metodę unieszkodliwiania osadów w przyszłości.

In this paper data of amount of sewage sludge and ways of sewage sludge treatment were presented. Quoted National Program of Municipal Wastewater Treatment and national plan of waste management prognose of changes of sewage sludge production in Poland are shown. Limits referring storing and biological using of sewage sludge were discussed. The thermal treatment of sewage sludge using new infrastructure or existing one (e.g. cement mill) was indicated as the leading method of sewage sludge treatment in the future.

Natural utilization of sewage sludge from big municipal treatment plants for reclamation of degraded lands as well as for fertilization of the green areas is a rational and cheap method of the sewage sludge disposal. However, the care about the sewage quality is required. Accomplishment of this task calls for collaboration among research centers, land administration and industrial plants in order to reduce the pollution at its source (sewage pretreatment in factories) resulting in reduction of heavy metals concentration in sewage i.e. also in sludge. Agricultural utilization of sludge is a difficult problem in the Żuławy region. The soils are fertile there and they do not need to be fertilized. Taking into account the fact that the amounts of sludge in this region are not high (from several to a dozen or so of m3 per day), they can be locally managed in forest nurseries, parks or green areas without equilibrium disturbances in the individual ecosystems. The sludge from sewage treatment plants in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot have been utilized for many years for reclamation of degraded land in industrial areas (areas around Siarkopol, phosphogypsum disposal site in Wiślinka, disposal site for ashes from heat and power generating plant EC-11 in Przegalin and Wiślinka, Gdynia Shipyard and Northern Shipyard areas). The sewage sludge can be utilized for fertilization of non-arable lands, for example forest nurseries, lawns in new housing estates, parks and green areas. This method of sewage sludge utilization is worth recommending since the areas in the "Three-towns" region destined for housing are situated on poor soils.
