Sand occupies a great proportion of the cementitious matrix product and in particular mortars. Hence, the study of fine aggregates used for concrete and mortar in general, deserves to be objects of research including sand which has always been considered as inert material, whose role is exclusively physical. The study of mortars performances based on prepared sand to assess the effect of the type and rate of substitution of mineral additions pozzolana and blast furnace slag of a natural sand fine fraction (sieve diameter less than 0.16 mm) is seen as the main objective of the present experimental research work. The natural sand replaced size is less than 160 µm and for rheological reasons the maximum replacement rate of natural sand is limited to 10%. The results obtained show a significant improvement of the mechanical properties for the mortars based on the new activated sand. With regard to durability tests of HCl and H2SO4 acids chemical attacks, the substitution of the quartz by active mineral additions in the sand-size skeleton allows an advantageous reduction in loss of resistance up to 50% and a mass gain around 75%.

Wraz ze wzrostem gospodarczym, który zapoczątkowany został wejściem Polski do Unii Europejskiej, rozpoczął się proces rozwoju polskiej infrastruktury, z którym wiąże się znaczny wzrost zapotrzebowania na surowce drogowe, głównie na kruszywa naturalne piaskowo-żwirowe. Wychodząc naprzeciw tym potrzebom Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny–Państwowy Instytut Badawczy, na zlecenie Ministra Środowiska, wykonał weryfikację wcześniej wyznaczonych perspektyw surowcowych tej kopaliny pod kątem wyznaczenia obszarów prognostycznych dla udokumentowania nowych złóż. PIG-PIB, w ramach realizacji tematu Mapa Geośrodowiskowa Polski w skali 1:50 000, prowadzi w tym celu prace, które uwzględniają zarówno konflikt z zagospodarowaniem terenu, obszary chronione przyrodniczo (w tym Natura 2000) i obiekty dziedzictwa kulturowego, uniemożliwiające lub utrudniające eksploatację złóż, ale także czynnik ekonomiczny związany z kosztem i opłacalnością transportu, jak i obowiązujące kryteria bilansowości dla złóż kopalin drogowych i budowlanych. Upon accession to the European Union, economic growth became accelerated in Poland, resulting in a boost in infrastructure development. This led to a marked growth in demand for natural sand-gravel aggregates and other raw materials used in road construction. To meet the demand for suitable raw materials, the Ministry of Environment commissioned the Polish Geological Institute–National Research Institute to start a re-evaluation of earlier raw material prognoses assessments in order to delineate prognostic areas for development of new resources. The re-evaluation has been conducted by the PGI-NRI within the frame of the compilation of the Geoenvironmental Map of Poland at the scale of 1:50 000, making it possible to identify potential conflicts with land-use plans as well as already established NATURA 2000 and other natural heritage conservation designations and more or less continuous built up areas which preclude or at least impede exploitation of mineral raw materials. The analyses also covered economic factors related to costs of transport and the current economic criteria of mineral resources and reserves. At the first stage of the project (between 2008 and 2012) the re-evaluation was conducted in 432 prognostic areas with a total area of over 33 thousands of hectares. According to the current economic criteria of sand-gravel aggregate deposits there were estimated resources of over 5 mld tons, of which around 3 mld tons of aggregates were suitable for road investments and over 2 mld tons of aggregates were suitable for construction.
