Współcześnie w obszarze architektury i wzornictwa przemysłowego następuje odejście od tradycyjnie pojmowanych pojęć funkcji, formy, procesów produkcyjnych, na rzecz zainteresowania elastycznością samoorganizacją, prototypizacją. Towarzyszą temu zmiany możliwe dzięki wykształceniu się nowych narzędzi cyfrowych, wywodzących się z przemysłu samochodowego, lotniczego czy technik animacji. Narzędzia owe od ponad trzech dekad są obecne w twórczym etapie procesu projektowania, z jednej strony sprzyjając przenikaniu się architektury i wzornictwa przemysłowego, z drugiej przyczyniając się do erozji dotychczasowych zasad nimi rządzących. Dziś możemy więc sobie zadać pytanie, na ile zamierzamy być cyfrowi, a na ile nie? Z odpowiedzią wiąże się wiele konsekwencji redefiniujących architekturę i design – dyscypliny bliźniacze.

Nowadays, in the field of architecture and industrial design, there is a departure from traditionally understood concepts of functions, forms, production processes in favor of interest in flexibility, self-organization and prototyping. This is accompanied by changes, possible thanks to the emergence of new digital tools originating from the automotive, aviation and animation industries. These tools have been present in the creative phase of the design process for over three decades, on the one hand, favoring the interpenetration of architecture and industrial design, on the other, contributing to the erosion of existing rules governing them. So today we can ask ourselves: how far digital we would like to go and where to stop? There are many consequences associated with the answer to this question that redefine twin disciplines – architecture and design.

Projektowanie generatywne to wykorzystywanie procesów algorytmicznych lub reguł i zasad po to, aby otrzymywać rozwiązania projektowe. Korzystanie z narzędzi generatywnych w projektowaniu wymaga od architekta innego niż dotąd podejścia do procesu twórczego. Jest to istotna zmiana, gdyż teoria i praktyka architektury jak dotąd koncentrowała się przede wszystkim na formie, a nie na procesie wyłaniającym formę. Te nowe aspekty w kreacji formy architektonicznej po raz pierwszy w Polsce badał Adam M. Szymski. Obecnie architekci, chcąc badać wpływ różnych czynników na formę, sięgają po cyfrowe systemy i narzędzia generatywne. Zapożyczają je z innych dyscyplin i wykorzystują do projektowania obiektów i materiałów budowlanych. Najchętniej stosowane, to: diagramy Voronoi, L-Systemy, automaty komórkowe (Cellular Automata), fraktale, gramatyki kształtu (Shape Gramars) i algorytmy genetyczne. Przy użyciu tych narzędzi można otrzymać interesujące formy i rozwiązania przestrzenne, które zostały przedstawione w tym artykule.

Generative design is the use of algorithmic processes or rules and regulations in order to receive design solutions. Using generative tools in the design requires a different approach to the creative process than ever before. This is a significant change, as the theory and practice of architecture has so far focused primarily on the form, not on the form-emerging process. These new aspects in the creation of the architectural form were first studied in Poland by Adam M. Szymski. Currently, the architects, in order to investigate the influence of various factors on the form, resort to digital tools and generative systems. They borrow them from other disciplines and use them to design buildings and building materials. The most often used include: Voronoi diagrams, L-System, Cellular Automata, fractals, Shape Grammars and genetic algorithms. Using these tools one can get interesting forms and spatial solutions, which have been presented in this article.
