The paper presents the electrical and timing characteristics of drive systems of battery locomotive weighing 12 tons, equipped with electric drive motors of various types. Analysis is done using the DC motor drive, used commonly in today locomotives and AC motors, asynchronous squirrel-cage and synchronous with permanent magnets. Presented results obtained by simulation of trains equipped with these types of drives, and energy balance was made on the sample transport route. Presented in this paper simulation results of different types of drives, the propulsion engines allow to choose the drive when upgrading mine locomotives.

The paper describes stand tests of innovative drive system of Lea BM-12 mine battery locomotive, which are realized within the project number N R01 0009 06 entitled "Mechatronic drive system for rail vehicles designed to operate in explosive atmosphere". The innovative drive system of Lea BM-12 mine battery locomotive includes permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) vector controlled from the voltage inverter. New drive system is supplied from explosion-proof battery pack. Scope of testing included preparation and implementation of regulator's primary system, which controls locomotives drive system cooperating with braking device and testing of Lea BM-12 drive system according to known work cycle of the locomotive which was developed basing on the real communication system in one of mines.
