Podstawową metodą oceny pozapalnych i zwyrodnieniowych zmian struktur stawowych jest badanie rentgenowskie. Jednakże szybki rozwój metod ultrasonograficznych w ostatnich latach spowodował, że badanie ultrasonograficzne staje się badaniem alternatywnym do rentgenodiagnostyki i rezonansu magnetycznego w rozpoznawaniu chorób reumatycznych. Już dziś wielu reumatologów i radiologów wykorzystuje badanie ultrasonograficzne we wczesnej diagnostyce oraz monitorowaniu chorób reumatycznych, a zwłaszcza w reumatoidalnym zapaleniu stawów. W artykule przedstawiono najnowsze techniki obrazowania dostępne w ultrasonografii, najczęściej stosowane przez reumatologów w praktyce lekarskiej. Przedstawiono przykładowe badania błony maziowej.

The basic diagnostics method of post-inflammatory and degenerative changes within the joints of hands and feet is the X-ray examination. The recent developments in ultrasound techniques caused that ultrasound-based diagnostics may become a real alternative to conventional X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging. This paper presents the recent achievements in ultrasound imaging used by rheumatologists for examinations of rheumatoid diseases. Exemplary diagnosis of the synovial membrane inflammation is described.

An investigation of a class of metabolic bone diseases called osteoporosis which is a very common bone disorder resulting a major disability is carried out with radiographic image modality for diagnostics and therapeutic planning. Based on a mathematical theory of shape authors developed a methodology to compute: (a) an erosion factor for different cases of osteoporosis; (b) a gradation of the disease so that doctor make some quantitative assessment and decide if the disorder can be treated conservatively or surgically.
